Hi all,

I'm a new member here, I hope it's OK to post a new thread.

I'm looking for some new irons.  I'm around a 4 handicap.  I've played most of my golf with ping eye 2s, until about a year ago someone gave me some Callaway X16s, which is what I'm using now.

I'm considering getting some cavity backed forged clubs.  I recently went to a Titleist fitting.  I hit the 712 CBs which were nice, but I'm not sure if I'm a consistent enough ball striker to play these clubs.

Any suggestions for irons in the same realm as the 712 CBs that strike a good balance between feel/playability and forgiveness?

I asked the fitter about the AP2s and he said I would hit the ball way too high and lose distance.  I tried them and I felt like he was right.

Thanks!

Have you by any chance worn a dime-sized spot on the sweetspot of your irons?

Actually, yes.  In fact, if you look closely enough, you can see an impression of FDR on my 8 iron.

I'd go with the 712 CBs then.

Since you're talking Titleist and if you strike the ball somewhat consistently, I'd suggest a combo set since lofts are consistent between the CBs and AP2s. Depending on your forgiveness point, I'd say 6-PW in CBs and AP2 in 4-5i, and a hybrid for a 3i. Of course, the breaking point could be 7i-PW, the point where you feel you need the added forgiveness. Of course, you should also be fit to the shaft so you don't get too high or spinny.

And don't like ego get in the way. We see people on these forums getting clubs and shafts that are too much for them but feed their ego. With shafts, high is good; high and spinning too much - not so good.

You played for years with Ping Eye-2s, and the fitter is telling you that the AP2s are too much GI?  That seems a little BS to me, but I wasn't there.  (BTW not calling you a liar, so hope it's not coming out that way.)  I played Mizzy MP-57s (forged player's cavity) for 4 years, and recently switched to AP2s.  I get a little higher launch, but I also switched to the slightly higher-launching KBS Tour shaft vice the old standard TTDG.

Put the TTDG (or a PX) shaft in the AP2, and I have no doubt that the flight will be comparable to what I had in my MP-57s, which is basically the same club as the 712 CBs.

Not saying you shouldn't get the 712 CBs.  They're great, great clubs.  My top 2 choices for a player's cavity are AP2 and 712 CB.  I just think that it's odd the guy would say that.

I played in high school (15 years ago) which is when I had the ping eye 2s. I have just never been really into the technology of golf.  (I don't even know what you mean when you say the AP2s are too much GI).  I never wanted to spend lots of money to upgrade my clubs since I didn't play much after high school.  I'm starting to enjoy the game a lot more now and I'm looking to upgrade.

I'm definitely trying to not let my ego get in the way here.  The only thing I care about is knocking strokes off my game.

My current clubs - Callaway X16 have rifle shafts.  I do hit them quite high, but I enjoy the high ball flight and trajectory.

Thanks for the replies.

Rifle shafts - but 5.5, 6.0, 6.5 Flex?

If no ego, then a combo set may work perfectly for you - the break point for the combo being where you think you want or need the added forgiveness. Since this game relies much on mental confidence, only you know that point where your mind and body are one for a club.

You might look for newer shaft options - Rifles are old school popular in the mid 90's to early 00's.

After ho'ing for many years, I find it's best to buy what fits you and what you love - and pay for it once. Some guys buy irons every year, some every 2 months - it's ridiculous, but some just love to try new things. I prefer the 5 year plan in irons, and then look up and see what's out there, depending on club wear and tear.

I don't even know what rifle shafts off the top of my head.  I'm sure they are stiff, but that's all I know.

I definitely want to buy only once in the foreseeable future.  How do you guys find what fits you?  Is it simply a matter of trying lots of options?

Haha I know, it's kind of pathetic.  In the years that I stopped playing often, I feel the technology has passed me by.  It was a lot more simple back in the day.

Well, now there are launch monitors.  Go to a place that has one and hit lots of different clubs.  If they have a launch monitor they should have a fitting cart for at least one brand.  Probably have multiple brands.

Yeah I'll do that thanks.  Any comparable clubs to the 712CBs that you guys recommend checking out?

I would definitely look into Wilson Staff FG Tour V2s. Shallow cavity forged player's clubs. Wilson has been really coming around in quality IMO, but they are still under the radar and are less expensive than the bigs..

Taylormade MC Forged are great and Nike Pro Combo has a good mix of forgivness and playability. If i had your ball striking i would get Titleist CB with a lower launching shaft in a heartbeat. They are the best looking irons on the market. Im sure someone has said this but im just giving my opinion.

Go to the Titleist Website and see what accounts have fitting carts. Get a static fit for length, grip, etc. and hit some clubs off a lie board to test lie. Then get out there and swing with various options, hopefully one with a launch monitor inside or out, so you can compare various shafts. And then hit the one or two options you like outside (if the LM was inside).

    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
    • So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. He is a visiting judge because the first judge was a graduate and big fan of Texas Tech, and he recused himself. The judged ruled the following... "Under Curry's order, Sorsby is permitted to play for Texas Tech's 2026 season on the condition that he continues his treatment for a gambling and anxiety disorder and serves a two-game suspension (missing games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State)."  Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly care for the NCAA. That still doesn't mean that a college can choose when or where to say, "Yea we agree to these rules for all our sports, well except in this case." Here is a breakdown from S&W. The Hidden Weapon in Sorsby’s Injunction: How a Lubbock County Court Order Quietly Neutralized the NCAA’s Most Powerful Enforcement Tool - Law Offices of Snell & Wilmer By Ryan J. Regula On June 8, 2026, Lubbock County District Court Judge Ken Curry issued a temporary injunction in Brendan Sorsby v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, Cause No. DC-2026-CV-0791 (99th Judicial District... The main judgement made sense. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
    • The chatter in my brain is when the distance is between clubs since I am pretty weak at shortened backswings, etc. I try to simply decide if being long or short is the better outcome and choose my club based on that and simply not even try for the “real” distance.  For me a full normal swing is what I strive for.
    • I saw this comment made in a golf article... "Most golfers stand over a 4- or 5-iron still negotiating with themselves. They think about how hard to swing, whether they have the right club, if they have the aim correct and more. It’s a lot to deal with and long irons punish the “half-in” golf swing." I am not sure the "most golfers" is correct regarding the bolded part. I can understand if there is a bunker, water, and/or OB that a lot of golfers would be fixated on that. I am not sure that leads to ending up more times there. Pending your level in golf, the variance is so large in outcomes, it could be just with in the expected outcomes. I can understand if have a big lake on the right side of the hole being one of the most terrifying shots for right-handed amateur golfers.  I am not sure many golfers are standing over the ball talking to themselves, "Ok, maybe I should step back and pull the 4-iron. Am I lined up right? Oh, the wind came up, should I swing harder? What am I going to have for dinner tonight, maybe steak. (Joking, somewhat 😛)" A question is that how much chatter do you get while standing over the ball. Are you questioning the everything about your golf shot?
