I have an iron set that came with a PW (45*) and AW (50*). The AW is my club for anything 95 yards and in, which makes 40/50/60/70 yard shots less desirable because I have a tough time judging them. So, I'm looking to add two wedges to my bag, or maybe just one if necessary. My initial thought was to pick up a 54* and a 58*. Any suggestions on what degree wedges I should look for? Would a 54* and 58* give me better options on the sub-95 yard shots? To substitute, I'd probably pull the 4i first and 5w second. It's funny how well my gaps are well taken care of in the fairway woods/long irons and yet I hit those far less than my low irons/wedges. I need to reverse that I believe.

Or you could go 56, 60; or ideally 55, 60 as that would keep your loft gaps the same.

I have to disagree with you on that one.  For a 20 handicap a 60* wedge is neccesary because they miss a lot of greens and you need something to help you get up and down.  A 60* wedge is much more useful and easier to hit than an open-face sand wedge, so this whole notion that you shouldnt have a lob wedge if you are over a 10 handicap is nonsense, IMO.

I play with a 54 and 60. Both can be opened and closed without changing the leading edge. I find I use my my 54* for most shots around the green. I've yet to get comfortable with using 8-irons and such around the green. I use the 60* when I need more height. I use the 60* to chip, pitch more often than I flop.

I have the Adams Tom Watson 3 pack wedges. 52, 56 and 60. I think they give me alot of flexibility from 100 yards and in. The 56 gets used mostly, but I use the 52 and 60 once or twice a round.

The great thing about those wedges is they were cheep. Under 100 bucks for the set. Golf Galaxy also sells the Watson wedges for about 30 bucks each.

You don't need a 60° wedge at this point. Get a 56°, and learn to hit partial wedge shots.  When you get a better feel, then a 60° may come in handy.  But not now.

Gotta agree with this. Get a 56* sand wedge with enough bounce to be versatile, learn to hit shots with that. You can hit a variety of shots with a 56*, including higher shots over traps, etc.

When you blend in the 54 + 58 or the 56, take a look at how long the shafts are related to your Burner PW and AW. Aside from loft, this is the biggest influence on what your overall wedge "yardstick" would be.

OP stated that his lowest club at present is 50°, and that he couldn't hit partial shots. While a sand wedge is a good addition right now, if for nothing else than to help him in bunkers, a 60° wedge adds nothing until he becomes adept at partial swings.

What I mean by that, and maybe this is what you're referring to, is I have a tough time judging how much backswing I need once I'm less than 90 yards away. My AW (50*) is my 90 yards and in club, and I normally take a 3/4 swing at the most with it. When I'm 65 yards away, for example, I have a tough time translating that distance to how much backswing to apply. If I had a higher lofted club that I could go 3/4 with and get ~60 yards, and another to get ~40 yards, that would be nice. Getting closer gaps inside of 100 yards would help me get more birdie/par putt opportunities where currently I put myself too far away because of the 90 yard range I have with my 50* AW.

The difference between 50* and 54* is profound. I find the distance much more forgiving with a 54* and if you do also, you'll find it easier to judge how hard to hit those 90 yard shots. More significantly, easier to judge those 30 yard shots.

I went to Dick's over lunch to check out what's available. I had my eye on the TaylorMade RAC wedges since they were on sale recently (2 for $80 I believe it was). The sale was over and because of it, the selection was limited to 52*. They had Maxfli C3 wedges as buy one get one, so 2 for $80. Anyone have opinions or experience with those? I was looking at 54* and 58*. They didn't have 60*, so a 56*/60* combo won't work. What bounce should I be looking for?

Related, would anyone recommend against buying a used wedge? I found two 56* on Global Golf for $30, and figured I'd get one of these to start: http://www.globalgolf.com/product/golfclub.aspx?pid=1013664&gd;=3&lft;=53 http://www.globalgolf.com/product/golfclub.aspx?pid=1014695&gd;=3&lft;=53

I bought a Taylormade 56 degree wedge used from a local shop and it's incredible. It looked brand new and works like it. Great grip, too. Paid only $56 for it.

Not really, no problem with picking up a used wedge. If you get yourself a 56* wedge, 11 - 14 degrees of bounce, that would work. Would be a good all rounder.

How difficult would a 12-14 bounce be to hit from the fairway? I normally don't take a divot, so I'm a little concerned getting a high bounce. Would be great for the sand but I'd also like to use it around the greens and in the fairway from ~60 yards and in.

You want some dunce for the sand and rough. You must hit the ball well from tight lies. If you find 8* bounce, it will be better off the fairway and more difficult to bounce through the sand.

You need some bounce on a 56 for sand, rough, etc., and it's not too difficult to hit from tighter lies, IMHO.

    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.
    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
