Do your stats reveal anything or surprise you?

This is my first season keeping stats. If someone had asked me before I started what my strength and weakness was it wouldn't have been what my stats are shaping up to be. I typically classify myself as a slicer. Previously in my mind if I miss the fairway I would have thought it's due to that. Turns out I miss it nearly as much left as I do right. I would have assumed I miss more long putts than anything. Turns out it's the medium length putts I struggle with. Probably because I face more of those than anything. I really thought I was hitting more greens. Again I was surprised to learn how much I chip/pitch it. Which makes sense considering my most common score is bogey and most of those are on par 4's. Probably not news to most here but I was happy to learn it's not the occasional 8 on a par 5 that kills me it's the 3 shots to the green and two putts that has become commonplace that's keeping me down. I realized I shouldn't be happy with bogey golf days and that the odd blow up hole wouldn't be as damaging if I was more consistent.

Good news is that after 20 rounds of keeping stats I can see a trend towards lower scores. I don't doubt some of that is playing into mid season shape but I have been making an effort to not let myself think a card full of bogeys is a good thing.

Dave :-)

They told me that I was wild off the tee and that I suck at putting.  I was not surprised.

The only stat I keep is my score, and subsequently my handicap index. Trying to keep track of more than that makes my head hurt......

My stats reveal that my game it pretty solid except for one glaring problem, I have a two-way miss off the tee.

My stats this year:

GIR         -73.02%

Fairways- 41.84%

Miss Left  32.65%

Miss Rt     23.47%

Putts per GIR 1.82

I am currently working very hard on eliminating the left side of the golf course off the tee. If I can do that I will cut down on bogeys and even bigger numbers.

This season my stats revealed that I had to hit more fairways, and get more up and downs, and i've improved both. Im hitting 64% of fairways, and 46% on up and downs for par. Thats up from 51% of fairways, but I did give up an inch on my driver to get the accuracy needed. But im still over 250 carry, so great. 13%(yup, that bad)was my average on up and downs at The beginning of the season.

My putts for the season could drop as well. currently 1.94. If I can get that below 1.85 average per round, I would be extremnely happy. Sure, its only a stroke or two per game. But its a stroke or two per game. lol.

Other than that, my GIR's were higher than expected, and seems to correlate pretty well with fairways hit. 68% ATM.

I'm a tad bit shocked that you hit 73% of greens in REG.....and you are only a +0.4.   What is the CR and slope of where you mostly play?  My only guess, from left field, is it's an easy course?   That is an insanely high GIR percentage.

I started keeping stats this year, they are showing that I am hitting pretty badly left (im a lefty) but I assumed that, since my typical drive is a fade/slice. My GIR are lower than I expected too. I am a bogey golfer so I didn't expect much. The App I use keeps my average distances for every club, every shot, so thats the only reason I'm even keeping the stats.

73% GIR is 13 greens hit. 1.82 putts per GIR says he only birdies 2 of those 13. So, may not be that far off.

My stats (generated by my sky caddie online) show I hit 13% of fairways with my driver and 50% with my 5W. Maybe I should leave the driver at home!

Thanks..This could possibly explain it.

If a player is hopping back and forth between tees rated 69.5 and 71.6......I can see how this person would need to hit a ton of greens to shoot the many par-breaker scores necessary to reach the plusses.  It's more difficult to achieve a scratch handicap on an easy course due to the lower course rating...IMO, because he needs to shoot a lot of par golf to do it.

The course I play is rated easier than it really is IMHO. The problem with my game is I hit the irons very straight and pretty darn well. I also hit the driver a long way, but unfortunately pretty crooked as well. So what that equates to is that 27% that I don't hit the green in regulation aren't misses just off the green with an approach shot, they are misses (and normally bad misses) with the tee ball where I am having to punch out or take relief hence a big number.

For example, in a tournament this past weekend I shot 76-76 (+8). I had 2 triple bogeys and 2 double bogeys due to hitting tee shots OB. In those 4 holes I was 10 over par so in the other 32 holes I was 2 under.

That's why I am working so hard right now on that part of my game, it kills me. And that's also why I am only a +.04 when I hit 73% GIR.

Can Keeping Stats Help Your Game?

And for anybody interested in keeping stats, I'd recommend the Scorecard software.

NM..golf reminds me of one of my senior golf partners I play with on occasion.

This guy is 75, he plays forward tees which is necessary because he only hits driver 200-220yds.  He nearly averages shooting his age of 75.   His official average is 77....the same as mine!!!!  I'm scratch......and he has a 4-5 index.  It doesn't see right.............this guy is a freaking machine..he is easily.a better golfer than me.  easily............he never misses a shot.  ...and he can putt!!  I'm not sure I'll live to be 75, but if I do....I hope I can play as good as that guy!!

A good read, thanks. I have Scorecard but recently made the switch to GolfLogix because of the dual function of being able to track stats and use gps features.

The only thing that surprised me, and believe me I can tell while playing, is how horrible my putting is vs. my ballstriking and driving.  I'm hitting 72% of fairways, but in my last round I had 14 putts on the front (great) but 22 on the back when I hit more greens and had longer putts.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
