Hello everyone,

I am in the market for a new set of irons.  I haven't played significantly since I was a freshman in college (2000-2001) and now I have time again.  I used to play Titleist DCI 981s and like them.   I am right handed, have roughly an 18 handicap and am working on that elusive one plane swing currently.

What recommendations would you give for a set of irons for a guy who is picking up the clubs again like myself?

Those DCI'S are a pretty darn good set of irons in their own right.  What's in the rest of the bag?

3-Wood: Titleist 910F;  15* Diamana Kai'li

Wedges: Scratch 51-11 TNC grind, Vokey SM-5's;  56-14 F grind and 60-11 K grind
Putter: Scotty Cameron Kombi S

Other clubs in the bag are from that era....

-- Driver - Titleist 975 D

-- 3 Wood Taylormade burner

--  Irons - DCI 981

-- Cleveland 56 and 60 degree wedge

-- Cheap blade putter that I like

I am considering trying some PING irons, but was overall happy with my old DCI 981

Back then, my bag looked an awful lot liked that, except that I had the 962's.

If it were me, I'd look at a more modern driver and 3 wood.  Maybe add a hybrid.  All before swapping out the irons.

Dude ... are you sure that you didn't just steal my old bag from my garage?  No joke ... my old set is almost exactly what you just described, except for the Burner 3 wood.  I had a Sonertec 16* 4 wood.  Otherwise, identical!  (I still use the 'cheap blade putter' though)

Also somewhat funny is that I currently play Pings as well!  Just got them in August (got fitted and everything) and love them.

What would you recommend as the first set of PING's to try or the first set of Titleist to try if I am searching for a post-DCI 981 iron set?
You would like Titleist  712 CB irons. I had DCI 981's a long time ago...great irons.
Yup ... CBs are probably closest. For pings, I love my i20s. Also look at titleist ap2s.

Your question is a familiar one.  I am on the hunt for a new set of irons and will be replacing my old Titleist 704CB's.  I had them custom fit over 8 years ago and have loved them.  I've shot some low rounds with those clubs, but am looking to replace them.  In my recent visits to local golf shops, I'm being steered towards Mizuno JPX 825 Pro's or RocketBladz.  I'm liking the look and feel of the Mizuno's and am not sure of the consistency behing Taylor Mades new slot technology in an iron.  I grew up playing Pings and loved the playability, but moved away from them because I wanted a more blade like look.  At 40 years old, I'm not sure my hand eye coordination will hold up as well going forward.  Before you look to dive back into more Titleist irons, realize they are "PLAYERS" clubs.  Your handicap may be more suited towards the Ping or Calloway - more forgiving with off hits.   At $600, the new Calloway XHots are pretty interesting.  I will have to give those a try before making a final decision.  There are so many great clubs on the market right now, its all about what looks best to you.  In the end, be sure to get custom fit.  It doesn't cost any extra!

I have the same bag in my back closet except for the putter and 3 wood.  I went with new Taylor mades this year, R11 and R11 drivers.  I like them but sometimes I really wish I would of stayed with Titleist since I loved my old irons so much.

Driver: :tmade: R11S (9 degree)
Woods: :tmade: R11 3 (15.5 degree) & 5 (19 degree)
Irons: :tmade: R11 4-AW
Wedges: :tmade: ATV 54 & 60 degree
Putter: :scotty_cameron: 2012 Newport 2
Ball: :titleist: ProV1
Rangefinder: :bushnell: Tour V2

I am playiing Callaway Razr x tours, project x shafts... they are great to me. I hit some older Titleist AP2 project x 5.5 at golf galaxy and on their simulator I was hitting the 6 iron 195 yards.

I would love to buy a set and take them to the course to really see how they played. I hit my Callaway 6 iron 170, so I wonder if the Ap2 six iron may have been bent a degree strong...

you can always go to your local golf shop and hit a six iron from several manufactures and narrow down sets one by one until you have your top three favorites. Then really test them out.

Try the 712 AP1's! When I bought new irons last year, I tried all the irons which included the G20's, i20's, R11's, JPX, RAZR,......etc. The 712 AP1's won out, but the i20's were a close 2nd. I highly recommend them. Very Long and very forgiving.

Take a look at the new G25's, they are a really nice iron as well.
