I'm not an instructor, but I'm very surprised that that swing produces a slice. Path sure looks like an inside one to me.

I tend to push slice it. Maybe there is something that causes me not to close the face properly.

I see the video here. Welcome to the site! Looks like a better swing than mine, and I'm in the low teens HCP. You sure your index is 33? I look forward to seeing comments on your swing so I can learn what people see you can improve.

If I were to hazard a guess (and I'm no instructor!), it's that you may be falling toward the ball a little bit on your downswing. In the DTL view, if you watch the leftmost part of your butt, it seems to move right (toward the ball). I'd think if you were to keep from doing that, you might be able to more easily get the club to the ball going from "in to out," helping reduce any slice. Just a guess! Good luck. I see iacas posting here, so if he has thoughts, they'd certainly trump mine!

Good point. Putting that on the training list ;-) Thanks!

Gonna see a Pro tomorrow. Will also post his thoughts here.

Cool. My one warning is that I've only given one tip- and it may or may not be valid :) This site steers everyone toward understanding five keys to understanding a good swing: Key #1 - Steady Head Key #2 - Weight Forward Key #3 - Inline Impact Key #4 - Diagonal Sweetspot Path Key #5 - Clubface Control (See http://5sk.com/index.php/site/about) A good instructor will see which of those areas need the most work ( your priority) and then find good drills to help that piece. Try to avoid accepting tips from random people like me unless you have a good understanding that it fits into a general area that needs improvement. :) Good luck with your pro. Keep us updated!

Cool. My one warning is that I've only given one tip- and it may or may not be valid :)

This site steers everyone toward understanding five keys to understanding a good swing:

Key #1 - Steady Head

Key #2 - Weight Forward

Key #3 - Inline Impact

Key #4 - Diagonal Sweetspot Path

Key #5 - Clubface Control

(See http://5sk.com/index.php/site/about)

A good instructor will see which of those areas need the most work ( your priority) and then find good drills to help that piece.

Yes I would focus on Keys 1 and 2 for now @kalaz . For Key #1, you need to turn both feet out to "free up" your turn a bit. Keep the left shoulder going down and in throughout the entire backswing. Will allow the arms to gain more depth and put you in a better position to get the weight forward on the downswing.

I wouldn't worry about the tush line, not a big deal and might even lessen as the above improves.

First of all, I appreciate the help! I certainly want to improve Keys 1 2. To check my understanding. So the first goal is to have less hands oriented swing. To achieve that I should rotate more. And to rotate more it would help to fan out my right leg. Second goal is to shift my weight without moving my head. To achieve that, the rotation also helps because it gives me more time to get on my left side.

Do I understand it correctly?

From your first video, I would look at your posture. More head down, less tush stuck out. Try to get more relaxed, it will probably feel more slouched over. This will help you turn on a steeper angle as well. Your left shoulder and left hip need to go down towards the ball more . You get very shallow with the turn, but make up for it with raising your arms. So your hands don't get any depth. Steeper turn helps with key number 1 and 2 because it allows you to turn on a centered pivot and also gives you a good angle for your hips to slide forward more in the downswing.

I wouldn't say it is becoming less hands oriented, but more in terms of getting the hands, arms and torso to all work together in the correct way.

Thanks guys. Had a session with my Pro today. His points:

  • I need to turn my shoulders more. I tried and I immediately felt difference. It allows me to have my hands more in front of my chest instead of around my body. He said I should not try to dip my left shoulder lower, that I am fine as it is
  • He stressed I should also work on my legwork. I need to get a bit more weight on my heels and start the swing by weight shift from the inside instep of my right foot. This should also help me not to early extend. He said the early extension was the reason for my driver slices. He gave me a drill for this - put alignment stick under front feet fingers during practice
  • We continued to check on my chicken wing that I got rid off just recently. He said it still needs some work.
  • I should shorten my backswing. He says this every time and I still cant achieve this :-)

Here are iron swings from today after the session.

Down the line (sorry for bad angle):

Face on:

It's better. Add a bit more hip turn too. It helps, for obvious reasons…

The early extension is a result of your backswing and transition: if you didn't EE, you'd come way over the top and swing well left. More than you still do.

I'd work on your backswing and transition.

Thanks for taking time to analyze my swing! My understanding is that to improve backswing I need to make sure its on plane. However, I am not sure how to work on my transition?

Well, you're working with an instructor, so I don't want to throw a bunch more out at you.

Basically, though, the shaft is too steep and the sweetspot too far out. You swing too much "down the wall of the house" rather than "down the roof of the house."
