Do Taller PGA Pros Hit It Farther?

Height vs. Driving Distance | FindTheBest

WHAT'S THIS?: The graph above plots the average driving distance and height of players during the 2013-14 PGA Tour season. The horizontal line shows the mean, and indicates that, yes, height is generally a good predictor for driving distance. Dustin Johnson (6-4) and Bubba Watson (6-3) are two taller guys who bomb it off the tee. One outlier is Golf Magazine Player of the Year Rory McIlroy, who averaged 310.5 yards off the tee despite his comparatively dimunitive size. Hover over a dot to reveal the player's name and driving distance. Click the dot to see more about the player.

One of the commentators at the WGC Shanghai event said Bubba doesn't drive the ball that high, I dunno, it looks pretty damn high to me. I'd be curious to see how he compares to other long hitters as far as ball flight height.

Off topic: I can't find any pro tracer vids of Bubba's drives, i figured there would be a ton out there.

Comparing apex height and driving distance shows that Bubba hits it pretty high (170') for a long hitter, and DJ and Rory pretty low (148'), the other long hitters (JB Holmes, Andrew Loupe, Koepka) hit it around 160'. Not sure what that means for amateurs though.

Followed Bubba some at the LA Open last year, he hit a couple drives noticeably lower than his playing companions but of course still outdrove them. The first time I thought he thinned it a little but I doubted that after he hit a twin to it later.  The mis-hits those guys have are not even generally noticeable on stock shots. I really think he does the high low hook slice thing more than anybody.

It was amazing how high every pro hits it. They all hit it really high, even the "shorter" hitters. Trajectory really sets them apart from us. I have a golf buddy who hits his 9 iron 150 so he thinks that means he hits it like the pros. Ummmmm, NO. Not even close.
