I am a 14 handicap at the time of this post hopefully that will soon change. I went out this morning to play a little golf. I was hitting all my clubs the way I have always hit them. this morning when I started my round I was hitting my 6 iron about 160 not to good but ok for me. Here in the last few months I was trying to get more distance out of my clubs, because how short I was hitting the ball it was making lowering my handicap almost impossible. like I said earlier I was hitting my 6 iron about 160 but towards the end of my round I decided to change up my swing a little and start working on my distance and by the time I ended my round I was hitting my 6 iron 190 in the air with no effort at all. Sound to good to be true well it happen and all I really changed was my grip I was over gripping the club so when I was swinging I had no chance to hit it far because my wrist were to tight which slowed my swing down way to much. I loosened my grip a little and picked up 30 yards and I didn't even have to hit it hard at all. I don't know if it will work for every one but it did for me.

Grip pressure is important for lots of things -

as I understand it

  • some people grip too hard
  • some people grip too easy
  • I believe other people are somewhere in between.......
  • :-P (gratuitous smiley face for those that need it here)

A search here will yield a handful of threads about grip pressure - what's too tight or loose - our impressions of what we 'think' is too tight - etc etc..  good stuff really

Personally - lately I've lessened my grip pressure a little for shots with clean lies and I'm not netting distance, but I am improving accuracy, and getting more successful good contact.  I still grip "firm" (whatever that means) for thick lies, chips and pitches in attempts to keep the club face from shifting....

Far me I was gripping way to tight which tightened my wrist. and if you wont to hit it far you have to have loose wrist. Try this if you grip your hand like if you had a club in them and grip tight and then try and move your wrist, then loosen your grip then move your wrist they move much easier with loose wrist which = faster swing speeds. Loosening your grip will only help you if you are too tight like I was. you still have to be able to swing it throw the ball. You do not wont to under grip either so it will not work for every one. This tip is for those like me that are way over griping. If your grip is to tight then your wrist will be too tight and if your wrist are to tight then you can not swing it as fast. When I said I swung it easy and hit it farther I really was swinging it faster but it felt easier because I wasn't as tensed up which made it easier to swing faster. So it felt like I was swinging easier because it didn't take as much effort to swing it harder.

Grip pressure is a purely subjective thing. It does take a lot of effort to to grip to the point you are restricting wrist movement.

I would check to make sure your grips on your clubs are clean and not worn out. My dad finally had his grips redone and he was amazed at how much better he can hold the club now.

Glad to see you gained some distance.

^^^  This is really beneficial.   When I started to clean my grips regularly I was amazed at the difference.  For that matter, I'm also likely to regrip new every year or two from now on also.  (plus it gives me something to do on a winter day)
