I've been deciding between the Mizuno MP 67 and the WilsonStaff FG62 clubs, both used, or a set of new blades/muscle backs. I hit almost all clubs I try extremely well and I'm trying to buy clubs better for shaping shots. I can include distances and other info if you'd like. What are the pros/cons of new vs used.

A couple of questions: If you almost always hit the ball well, why do you have an 18 HDCP?

I'm not being snarky - but, if you jump to blades with your HDCP, you might see your scores go up, not down.

As for shot-shaping, you can hit a basic draw or fade with most any club if you understand set-up for the golf swing. To go beyond that will require a lot of practice.  And, competition golfers normally use their stock shot shape for about 90% of their shots.  This stat has come up in other threads on TST. So, what will blades bring to your game?

As far as new vs. used:

  • New: You can get custom fit, and have more variety on shafts. Drawback: Much higher cost.
  • Used: If you know the recipe for the used club (variations in lie and shaft length), and it fits what you need, you get a lower cost for the purchase. Drawback: if it's not quite your fit, you can spend several weeks trying to get them tweaked, and end not really being able to hit them.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I like the MP-52s I bought lightly used 3 or 4 years ago. The shop I bought them at bent them 4 degrees up, so it was almost like getting a custom set (which can be an advantage of new). New sets also have the advantage of being unused and some may have a better warranty than used sets. The biggest advantage to used is the lower price and the fact that you might be able to turn around and sell them for close to what you paid if you don't like them.

my handicap is: errant drives terrible putting I struggle with approach shots closer than 80 yards I have been working with an instructor 3 months working on shot shaping and he's been letting me borrow his blades to do so.

I'd go for used and spend the money you save on lessons, getting fitted for a putter (and possibly driver and wedges).

not to mention, smaller club faces always help me with my impact
