My Swing (DuffMcGee)

I've been Playing Golf for: I spent a few years in high school practicing very hard with a self taught swing and my goal was to make the golf team. One of my biggest disappointments in life is that I missed it two years in a row due to not being able to adjust to extremely fast greens. Because of that disappointment coupled with me being in school and broke for over 7 years (went to undergrad and law school) I took around a 10 year break from the sport I love so much. But I'm back at it and trying to get really good. :)

My current handicap index or average score is: 14

My typical ball flight is: Usually straight. If not straight, then 65% draw and 35% fade.

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Snap hook. My most dreaded shot of all and it always rears its ugly head at least once per round. It is not an exaggeration to say that if it weren't for this shot I would be shooting in the low 80's or even better every round for the most part. I had a chance to break my all time best score just yesterday and after an entire day of hitting the ball right down the fairway I snap hooked off the tee on #18 and ended up taking a 7.

I'd like to see you make a couple set-up changes. The grip is too weak and it's causing you to load the club too far inside the hands on the takeaway.

When the club loads inside the hands so much, the compensation is to swing past parallel and get the shaft across the line at the top. This is a big part of where your hooks are coming because of how it effects the sweetspot path on the downswing.

Would also like to see you turn the feet and knees out.

So you can keep the lower body a bit more stable rather than having the left knee "cave in" on the backswing which leads you to lean left at the top of the swing.

Man that feels so weird having the club in the fingers with my left hand. I always thought I had a "fingers" type grip bc of my right hand grip but I never realized the club was in my left palm. After only a few practice swings I can see that I have no callous built up on the left fingers and that I am going to blister instantly. Question: how is this considered a stronger grip than having it more in your palms? It feels so loose. The great thing is that I can definitely feel the club face closing automatically without any of the effort I usually have to take to get it closed. This should allow me to avoid "realeasing" the club early like I usually do, correct? I've always wondered why I can't keep lag the entire way through even though I have decent wrist flex. It must be that I couldn't do it but square the club face up bc of my grip, correct? Thanks!

Sorry for all these questions but I was just in my backyard practicing and I've noticed that this grip is really helping me start my divots "in front of the (fake) ball" which I haven't ever been able to do. I am a pretty decent golfer for someone that has such a hard time "hitting ball first) but it's always been a huge disappointment to me that I never get back spin on the greens. Does gripping in the fingers help getting the divot further forward in your experience?

When they are talking about weak vs strong grip they are referring to the position of both hands in relation to each other and where you are gripping the club and not how strong or weak you in relation to the strength at which you are holding the club.. Think about in terms of how many knuckles you can see when you look down at your left hand.. If you can't see any but you can see a few of your right hand this is considered a weak grip, however if you can see 2-3 of your left hand and none of your right hand this is a strong grip.. In other words of your right right palm is facing more towards the target and up vs facing down I is strong ect.. Do a quick search on google on the difference and you will get a whole bunch of pictures and stuff.. He is asking you to change because the weak grip is promoting the club going across the line like he mentioned, coupled with your hip sway and you are coming from the inside a lot causing your hooks (at least that's what I understood from his post).. In regards to you throwing the club ect I don't know, but what I do know is once you start fixing some of these fundamental things you will fix other things without even thinking about them.. Work on the pivot and grip stuff and get that down, and then they will most likely recommend you work on your weight forward and flat wrist at impact.. All that stuff will eventually lead to you hitting the ball first, but getting ahead of your self is what slows the progress down.. Heck, I worked for almost 6 months just on pivot stuff, and now I have been working on flat wrist and path for over a year and I'm still shooting 100.. Your obviously a much better golfer than I do you will be able to make these changes in no time and see your HC drop quickly.. I hope all the above isn't too much, and I'm sorry if it is.. I'm sure one of the guys will correct me if I said anything wrong! Good luck bro!

I have always just "made things work" without any instruction because I was a pretty poor kid growing up. The good thing is I've always picked up hand eye coordination type sports really quickly. I just played from the blues at a difficult course and almost got my first under 80 round. I definitely need these guys' help to get really good because I'm sure my bandaids will start falling apart and stunt my potential.

I know I'm supposed to be a stupid monkey, but out of curiosity...... Why would a centered hip turn eliminate or drastically reduce a snap hook?

Good question.

If the hips slide back, then they have to move quite a bit forward in a short amount of time. Sometimes in an effort to create axis tilt the golfers will tip their head back which can send the path too far out with a high rate of closure (face closing at a fast rate). Or with the hips back and head a little forward the golfer will sense they're too "steep" and early extend (and tip the head back) to try and shallow out the strike. This will stall the rotational aspect of the pivot and can shove the sweetspot out to the right.

Much easier to fire the arms down when the pivot is centered.

Ok so I am turning my feet out and gripping to where the "snuff box" is over the shaft. My swing basically still looks the same from the last videos but I assume set up is the first step to get under control before moving on. I really don't feel like the shaft is coming that far across the line and I feel like my back swing is like 70% of the length it actually is. Feel is definitely not real. What would be the next thing to work on? I would upload the new videos but my 6 year old daughter took them and honestly they look almost identical to the other videos just with the feet flared and a better grip.

Still suffering from an early release. Not so bad with irons but it's a definite issue with the driver. MVMAC you said something (this might be a bad recollection) about how because I'm coming from such a steep angle that I have to release early to square the club face. Is there a drill to help with this for the driver? I use the punch shot/weight forward drill for irons but haven't found a driver video for this issue. Thanks!

Release early to shallow the angle of attack.

Is there a drill to help with this for the driver? I use the punch shot/weight forward drill for irons but haven't found a driver video for this issue.

With the driver you can get away with a little bit of a "flip" but I get what your concern is.

Just keep working on your pieces and make sure to rehearse the movements slowly. If the full speed motion looks the same, post a video of you practicing the movement or a video with the set-up looking better.
