Exaggeration Necessary

This golfer is working on not delivering the clubhead AND his hands from so deep:

Predictably, he often hit BIG pushes, BIG draws/hooks, and more than his fair share of shanks.

Do I eventually want him to swing like the golfer on the right?

Absolutely not. But he - like you - has made hundreds of thousands of swings like the one on the left. If he exaggerates in practice, and swings INward more than he eventually should, I'm good with it. I encourage it, in fact.

Great blog. This is the exact thing me and my instructor are working on at the moment. I seen in your MySwing thread where a gentleman mentioned getting deep at the top causes the hands to move out. In my case its the total opposite. I get too deep and then my hands drop straight down with no diagonal movement. Its been hell for me to change but its getting better. Its funny but the kid in the pictures here look very similar to me except my right foot doesnt come up on my downswing. Great post Erik,

Adam

That's the next thing he has to work on… though it's not too important, and he can do it really well the first time you tell him to. It's just what he's always done. It's not too bad for him, but if he can clean these other things up, it may be his priority.

Reminds me of my old (I think old) shallow, in to out DS path.. Did he have a steep BS and is his cure an exaggerated shallow BS? Just wonderin'...

Not really. It's just that he let everything drop "down" in transition without any "out."

wow...i must be confused...the left pic in the second set of pics looks great to me except for the early lifting foot.

Arms, hands, and the sweet spot way too deep. Hits out a TON.

ok so he's looking for something inbetween the left and right pics.

Yes, but probably a bit closer to the right pics.

Sorry for all the questions, but just to clarify for my own understanding. At A6 you'd want the clubhead in line with the hands? Would just slightly inside the hands be better than slightly outside the hands?

If the player wants to hit a draw (or a push), sure. It can be slightly out if they want to play a fade or a pull.

Great post! You know my story. I'm working on hands moving out, but doing so by trying to move the rt elbow straight out and feeling like it's in front of the hands. My hands drop and the club shaft gets vertical. I have to get my elbows closer in transition not spreading apart.
