I'll start out by saying I have taken a 2-3 lessons with our club pro and my swing has improved vastly and I feel it is pretty consistent. Started last yr as a 17.8 hc and currently at a 13.2. Partly to blame is my schedule; working 14 days and home for 14 days creates some rust every month....

A neighbor of mine offered his entire set of R11s if I liked them; if not simply return them. So I've played 2 rounds with them and I hit them better than my clubs. Especially the driver which seems to have solved a lot of my misses.

Well on the 1st tee of the 3rd round, the shaft of the driver broke near the head.

I'm wondering if I should look at getting fitted for a custom shaft that I could use in a newer head when I'm ready (probably next year). Knowing the head adapter for this R11 isn't the same as newer drivers, can this be changed out for a new adapter when the time comes?

Another option I'm considering is looking at a previous gen newer driver or slightly used driver to keep my budget in line. Truth is, I'm looking to slowly upgrade my clubs as I can afford to while continuing to take a few lessons.

I’d go with this. You’re at a point where it’s one of the highest improving curve. Don’t be too convinced it’s the clubs that are making your improvements. If you’re making swing changes/progress you’ll probably see some variation in your ball striking so don’t attribute too much of it to the clubs you’re using. That being said the driver is an important club and you have to feel comfortable with it. There are great deals on older models out there. Cheers!

If you like the R11, you can always purchase another one.  You can find them online at Globalgolf

I agree, the R11 is old enough where you would see gains in forgiveness and distance in a newer driver.  This would be your best bet.

If you are looking to get out of it cheap, a place like Golf Galaxy could put a cheap shaft in the adapter for sort money.  So don’t throw out the part with the adapter on it, it can be reused.  You might also see that shaft on eBay with the adapter on it cheap.

eBay is a great place to get clubs.  Almost everything in, and including, my bag is from eBay.

Same here, I shop eBay for just about everything and haven't been screwed yet. Just bought a Cleveland 52* GW with a graphite shaft, (all my clubs are graphite), arrived in a few days, brand new and it is working out well for me.
