I don’t know if I’m posting in the right spot but I’m looking to get a driving iron. What should swing speed be in relation to a driver? I’m trying to fill a gap between 3i and 3w and also trying to have a go-to club off the tee if I NEED to find a fairway.

Pretty new to golf, only been golfing about 2 years, and I am really starting to get my bag in order now that I am starting to play more and striking balls better.

I'm guessing somewhere over 100 to make use of a driving iron. My swing speed is much faster than that and I can crush my 2 iron off the deck no problem. Others who have hit my club can't get it airborne very well.

Thanks for the response but not really what I was asking. In relation to a driver swing speed how fast should a driving iron be swung? The same? Slightly slower? Harder?

Everything is going to be slower than the driver since the driver has the longest shaft.  I have to say though, that this is a pretty strange question to be asking, considering that your goal is to simply hit a fairway.

Well yes the goal is to have a fairway finder but I could do that with a 7i if that’s all I wanted. Want a club I can get distance with and also know I’m going to find a fairway a majority of the time.

I think you're confusing swing speed with effort/tempo. You won't swing your driving iron as fast as your driver because the club is shorter. You can swing it at the same tempo/same feeling of "effort level", but the swing speed will be slower with the driving iron.

Also, if you don't hit as many fairways as you want with your current driver swing speed/tempo, why would it make sense to try to swing harder with a shorter, less forgiving club with a smaller sweet spot?

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲

    • Why wouldn't it have? It's not like you were playing it as a 145yd par 5 and made a 2 or something.  Or not like it was playing 50yds to a temporary green or something either.
