Like the title says, I am currently using a Taylormade R580 xd R flex 10.5, "usually" hit it ok but only about 180yds. Looking to keep control but add some distance. Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to TST. Pretty hard to answer with so little info. With drivers the shaft can be the real decider. So many drive heads that are more forgiving than those 10-15 years old. What’s your swing speed? How old are you? What’s your ball flight pattern usually? How far do you hit a 7i?

My suggestion is to go get fitted for a driver. Get rid of the guess work.

Also, go the component route. Let a club builder build your driver to your fitting specs. A component driver will also save you some money.

The Mizuno JPX model is one of the easiest drivers to control.
I can control ball flight for any direction or flight with ease.
It is the most effortless driver I have ever played.

:ping: drivers, by and large, have been the most forgiving drivers I've owned.

My current model is the (several generations old) G25, but I've had a G2, G5, K15, as well as a few models before those, and they were nowhere near as finicky as my old :titleist: 975D.

My old :tmade: R580D was pretty forgiving as well.

I agree with getting fitted and have the club built for you. But you're a high handicapper and if you are looking to buy off the rack with some changes available you might want to look at the Cobra F-Max or the F9. As you can guess I'm a Cobra fan, you get a good club for your money IMHO.

Here's another vote for Ping. Any of the G series would work. My advice is ti find a used G20 or G25 you can demo or several rounds. It might be easier to find a used G400 and they're good too.

I used to have the TM R580 driver although in a stiffer flex than you, and found it to be quite unforgiving but when I did hit the sweet spot the distance was fine. I now have a Cobra F8 which I got in an end of season sale when it a couple of years ago and find it much more forgiving so would recommend it.

You can also adjust the loft and the shaft of the F8 (like you can on most modern drivers these days) so getting fitted might not be absolutely essential if you know your swing speed/ tempo. Though obviously getting fitted for a shaft even on a cheap driver would be better than buying an expensive one and hoping it works out.

I also got some extra distance using the Cobra F8 versus my previous drivers, maybe 20 yards, and I find it very forgiving too though.

You can get some good deals on them in the used market these days.

A lighter shaft might help you to get more swing speed and longer drives, so an adjustable driver with a light shaft sounds like it could work.

Another vote for PING. I’ve always opted for PING after fittings as they have been the most forgiving for me.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
