I have searched around the forum a little bit and can't find what I'm looking for.

I'm wondering how I can calculate my handicap by different facets of my golf game, so that I can calculate my weaknesses and work on what to improve.

For example is there to work out for example that my 16 handicap is made up:

Putting 10 hdcp

Driving 20 hdcp

GIR 14 hdcp

U&D 18 hdcp

Sand saves 24 hdcp

etc.

I would like to be able to see areas that need improvement and to measure how they are improving.

Do I need an app or is there a way of calculating this?

I found an app called GolfMetrics, which calculates strokes gained for all shots, drives, approach, short game, and putting. It assigns a handicap level for each area. Since I have been using this app, I have learned I need to work on my 20-60 yard short game, and my driving (I already knew I need to work on my tee shots). It was a huge revelation to me when I saw that, according to strokes gained, I am a single digit index in approach, recovery, putting and other short game shots, but a high teens in 20-60 yards and a 20 in driving.

The difficult part in using this app is you need to know the exact distance to the hole for each shot you take on the course. I use Shot Scope to get this information. The app costs $70 per year. I have been using a 5-day trial and I am seriously considering purchasing.

Arccos does this (and also does strokes gained):

GameGolf does strokes gained by category.

YOU (vs) OTHER GOLFERS How do you compare to other golfers in the US?

Very interesting so out of my last 10 rounds 8 have been in the 80s av. 86 ... so going of your link.. if I keep this up I should be a sub 10 ??? was thinking I would need to break a few high 70's into the mix to break into the single digits

TaylorMade myRoundPro calculates strokes gained (driving, approach, short game, putts), and you can set it to multiple different playing skills (pro, scratch, bogey, etc.) to see how you stack up against each. I lost the most shots on driving and approach, but haven't put in as much practice and range time as I should.

You should lose the most shots there.

If you're losing 3 shots in all categories against some benchmark level, your putting and short game are WAY worse than they should be and are glaring weaknesses.

You should lose about 2/3 of your shots in the full swing (driving/approach) - and about 28 and 39% there while losing about 19% and 14% in the short game and putting.

In other words if you're 10 shots away from someone, you should only be losing about 1.4 shots putting.

Nailed it. I could have brought LSW into my initial post, but it sounded like the OP was just looking for a way to see the gaps. Attached is a very recent round that I played better than average for me. The SG is comparing to scratch.

It depends on the ratings and slopes of the courses you play in order to become a single digit cap....you could be a single cap shooting in the low 80's if you played really difficult rated tee blocks/courses.

    • Day 136 (15 Sep 24) - Got in a solo round late this afternoon.  With a solid ENE wind of 10-15 mph it was about playing the wind - hurting wind going out (played 2 clubs up), helping coming in (played 2 clubs down).  Shot a solid 80 (39 front / 41 back).  The most fun was hitting tee shots and approaches that rode the wind.  A great afternoon of course management focused on working with the wind.
