A competition is set up as a series of knockout rounds but each game is played as a 'match' using strokeplay counting (ie the winner is the one with the lowest net score).

Should each game/'match' be treated as a 2 man field strokeplay competition or should each player record their score as a general play score?

Why do you ask, and what are the differences in your mind between the two options you gave? Are you asking about whether you'd call it a tournament score or a "general play" score for handicappIng?

I wouldn't call it a "match" per se. I'd use stroke play rules and the winner advances to the next bracket.

I have been asked by the Committee of a local club and the underlying question is as you suggest. Are the scores to be returned as Competition (in WHS terminology) scores or General Play?

If the former, should each round be set up as one competition for all players (preferred I think) or a series of two man field competitions?

Each game will be strokeplay and the lower scorer of the two players in that game goes into the next round

To the first question, I would suggest that the scores be entered as Competition Scores, as it is a competition, it is stroke play, full rules of golf, and another player to attest if that's appropriate (or required) in your part of the world.

To the second question,

I'm not sure I understand, I don't see that it matters from a Handicapping standpoint.  If you are using some type of Tournament Management software (we use GolfGenius) I think you can set up a "bracket" and instruct that system to determine the winner based on total strokes rather than on holes won.  Personally, I'd do it the old way, on a big sheet of paper with the brackets done by hand.

Makes sense.

    • Day 237 (26 Dec 24) - played 18 with niece and her husband at one of the local courses.  We were first out - so we pretty had our own pace of play.  First few holes were a struggle, but the groove started by hole 5.  The green side wedge game kicked in - had several kick in up and down pars.  Best of the day - had my first ever sandie birdie on #9. It’s a neat par three with a pot hole bunker - found it off the tee.  Had about a 22yd shot from the bunker to the flag.  Hit an easy shot out with the 54 that hit softly and gently rolled center cup.  Had several other close wedge shots into others that were close but no hole out.  Was a great day with the green side wedge game - and seeing solid fruit from the drills.
    • Day 16: 12/26/2025 A little more mirror work today. Then out to the garage net.  The first part of my PPJ swing thought is really starting to stick. The J still takes some focus. Plus, I'm still putting a priority on getting all the way to my finish.
