Are a bad Idea, IMHO. I don't know if it's just me that thinks this way, but I associate users by their avatar, and remember them more by that then thier names. There are like 15 people with that gopher avatar and I always think they are the same person. It would make it a lot less confusing if we got rid of them. Just a suggestion.

People that post frequently (and are thus worth remembering) tend to change their avatars.

I agree... the standard ones are a bit confusing.

People that post frequently (and are thus worth remembering) tend to change their avatars.

true... but not all

I always keep the same avatar, I dont really see what you have to remember peoples names for. and if we get rid of them, how are you going to remember people?

yours isn't a standard one

.... he was only suggesting getting rid of the "standard" ones, not the unique ones. Dent... yours is very unique by the way... I'll never forget you.

While I agree with you, I hate when stuff like that is codified. To avoid seeming dictatorial on a board I run, I just don't make any avatars available - your are either known by your username alone or you find your own avatar.

But yeah, it is confusing - I agree.

yeah, But there is at least one person who has that gopher who posts frequently(don't remember his name) who I mix up with all the people with 12-15 posts.

I always keep the same avatar, I dont really see what you have to remember peoples names for. and if we get rid of them, how are you going to remember people?

Not get rid of them all together, Just get rid of the default ones: the range balls, the ashworth logo, the gopher. you know all the ones that are pre-loaded.

Although its confusing, how hard is it to look at their name and remember it?

Not very hard, but when there are 30 names with a caddyshack gopher next to them it tends to get difficult

The problem I see with that is that some people may be either lazy (not want to take the time to put up a specialized avatar), indecisive (not sure what avatar to use), or weak in computer skills (not knowledgeable in how to make or upload an avatar).

If we were taking a poll I'd vote for keeping the generic avatars.

How about when people change their avatars? Is it the same confusion?

I'm not trying to be difficult, but I am thinking of changing my avatar and the confusion could cause me to keep this one (which I like; don't get me wrong). In fact, I have a handful I intend to make. Maybe I can donate my old ones as I retire them, or would that just cause people to associate others with me?

I don't see what's so hard about reading the poster's name. I mean, avatars are cool and all, some of us who post more will probably change every so often. Either that or they pick a memorable one and stick with it. But still, the name's just as important, you know...

That is beside the point. The fact of the matter is that we associate people with visual references. We do it in real life and we also do it on the internet. Sure we can read the user names, but by the time we are reading the user name we have already noticed the avatar because that is how the human brain absorbs what it sees on the webpages. The pictures are noticed first followed by the text.

As for where I stand on this topic, I'm somewhat of a moderate. I feel like it is good to have some very basic standard avatars to choose from. However, I feel like Yoshi and the groundhog should not be available options. These avatars do not look like standard avatars, so it seems unique when there are actually many people that use them. Anyways, that is just my opinion. This is not a topic that I feel passionate about, but I am tired of the arguments about just being able to read the user name. That is like saying that phishing websites should never work because people should just look at the URL before they do anything on the site.

As a trial, standard avatars are now missing. Users can be encouraged to use their own. The only standard one we have now is the Sand Trap logo.

This is just a trial.

    • Bryson got hit with a 2 shot penalty, after the round, for improving his lie on hole 5.  Here is a post on X, showing how he stepped on high grass when he was looking down his target line.  When they cut to the side shot, you can see how close he was behind the ball.  I think the R&A probably made the correct decision. You just have to be really careful when you are walking in the high grass, around the ball and where you are to make a swing.

    • Overall, well said. People have to be very careful in trying to describe very complex problem in simple terms. In this case, it is a clear fundamental misunderstanding of Newton's 1st and 3rd laws.  To clarify more on the misinterpretation of Newton's 1st law. The exact interpretation of Newton's 1st Law....  "Every body continues in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a straight line, unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed upon it" yea, a body will stay motionless unless a force acts upon it. An object will stay on its path of motion unless a force acts upon it.  I get it, complex physics problems are difficult. There is a lot of simplification done in most physics class when it is taught. A classic problem uses a frictionless surface. Projectile motion excludes drag and wind direction. Collisions are usually elastic. The golf swing is not a simple physics problem.  Yea, I think they got caught up the data on the graphs and are not truly understanding cause and effect.  If the golfer isn't first pushing into the ground, then the ground isn't going to push back.  The internal forces of the body create the motion, not the external forces from the ground. The ground isn't like what Psy uses to start his concert. 🤣 You probably need to be connected to the ground and have those GRF to help the body produce the motion you want. Your body has to move in the right way to produce the GRF which helps you move the body in the way you want. Body motion precedes the GRF.
