I Thought I Have Shortened the Back Swing, but on Video It Looks Almost the Same

I have early release problem. I thought I have shortened the back swing to only 2/3 to combat this but I was really surprised that on video it looks almost the same as the full swing. Is this usually what happens? I probably have to feel that I shorten the back swing even more. I have slowly learned that you have to really exaggerate any change significantly to have a little change.

Yes, this is what usually happens. Most people who are asked to take a shaft parallel to the ground (half swing) are around shoulder height or better. Feel ain't real and this is a perfect example.

Do you practice with any sort of video feedback? I used Mirror Vision app on iOS for awhile, and recently got a Live View Pro camera which is a more convenient for me, and having the instant video feedback is unbelievably helpful for things like you describe.

I enjoy the AMG youtube channel, in spite of some of the click-baity titles, and I have heard a few quotable quotes about practice that resonated with me.

  • I think, when asked what the best way to practice a certain concept, their reply was: do it right
  • Another time I heard one of the guys say something like: practicing without feedback is just exercise

I just use my phone but I am looking for a USB camera and plan to mount it permanently on the wall. I just checked out Live View Pro you have mentioned and it is a little more pricey than I had thought. I may buy one anyway to have instant feedback. I agree on practicing without feedback is just a waste.

If you have two iOS devices (two iphones, or an iphone/iPad), the Mirror Vision app is pretty good, but I think there is a yearly subscription fee after the free trial expires. I used the app for a bit, but I don't have an iPad, so viewing on my second iPhone was not ideal. I'm happy with the live view pro camera, but it was a bit of a commitment at $349. I had an Amazon Fire tablet that was compatible with the camera, so I have a nice big screen to view the video on.

Feel ain’t real. And you’ve realized that. So before you dive into this …are you sure ‘early release’ is your priority problem if at all?

I would recommend posting your swings in the Member Swings thread, it could be your backswing length is functional. This way we can see exactly what's going on.

Maybe consider getting a used iPhone 6 - it's way cheaper than a Live View and probably similar in cost to a USB camera, even though it's an old phone, the video capabilities are still very good. I'm still using mine and I have a current-ish model iPhone as my primary phone.

The one quote is "The best drill is doing it 'right.'"

Also, you need to figure out WHY your swing is so long, not just think "swing shorter."
