I'm watching this video where it mentions that dechambeau switched to having more bend in his trail arm during the backswing, which has stopped him from being on a one plane swing

Is he's correct in saying that this results in more power?

Would there be any disadvantages in increasing the bend in the trail arm during the backswing, so it's no longer a one plane swing, eg would it reduce consistency of hitting the ball flush?

Depends on the golfer. No general rule of thumb here. Jim Furyk was one of the best iron strikers, and he did not have a one plane swing. Honestly, golf instruction or concepts need to just stop using this one-plane or two-plane swing labels. Just find what works for you.

There is no one size fits all.  Look at the LDA.  Some of the weirdest swings you will ever see.  And then you look at the PGA tour and you see different swings as well, though not as extreme as the LDA.

The key is consistency and being able to generate club head speed.  Don't try bending your trail arm unless you are either going to go back to the old swing if it doesn't work, or are willing to put in the effort to ingrain a bent trail arm swing.  Muscle memory is an amazing thing and without the hard work, you will have inconsistency.

In my case, no. Definitely not an absolute formula for everyone.

Some like me need to go the other way. I've been working with @iacas for months to reduce it. I agree with other posters.

@KevinBlake, are you asking for your swing or just in general? Because if it’s the former, which it feels like it is, you’re going about this all wrong.

Both, I'd like to know if there's biomechanical advantages in having the hands higher at the top of the swing and if that was the case I'd see if I could incorporate it into mine & if it would be suitable

Damn Kevin…I’m not even an instructor but I certainly think you’re doing yourself a disservice in all this pondering and video searching. Not to be an ass but you're all over the place. You’re building a house and analyzing the kitchen sink before even having the foundation poured. Have a good instructor give you a priority piece then focus on that and that alone. You’ll find much better progress that way. Just my two cents.🙂

Yea, not something you can decide on your own. Someone can say all the benefits of a single plane swing, but it might not work for you at all.

That's not a good plan, IMO.

Where's your Member Swing topic? I don't see one.

I haven't made one yet, will see if I can get a video later

Good. I will be easier for you to improve with analysis of your swing than to follow video tips. Watching these videos can be educational, but your priority may be different that the video subject.

    • Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.
    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
