Oh, its not the reading that's difficult, its keeping the ball anywhere near the hole!  But there WERE times where I needed to borrow a finger or two.

Yea, if you hit it to certain spots, you are just not keeping it with in 5 FT of the hole. It isn't like you can't stop it near the hole from other putting locations, but certain locations you are just screwed.

That would explain it. Am planning to go back this summer for a day trip. I think I was a bit shell-shocked from how different it is from when I played 10 years ago. It is a dramatic transformation. 

Perspective is a strange thing. For me it was the highlight of the trip.

We had some folks play there from our CC a week after we did and vowed to never go back after the beating they took. They said something to the effect of more sand than fairways (which is of course an exaggeration ) and greens not being fair.. ha.

I've played it when the greens were rolling. You just can't be a moron. They're fine.

What do people think of Oakmont, etc. There are plenty of severe greens on many, many courses in the world.

The thing is, hypothetically they can take them to like a 10 STIMP and they could feel like 12 because of the slope.
 

Very sloped greens are not that big of an issue and can bring a ton of fun. When you have to think, maybe I should hit it 20ft right of the pin to get it close, it’s an interesting puzzle.

      Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
