Difference between Black Pearl and Chrome Finish on the CG12?

Guys,

I have been playing my wedges forever. I'm to the point now that my 60* is needing a replacement, and possibly my 52 and 56 to remain consistent.

I use my 60* for chipping, sand, and up to 90 yards and anything possible( its my baby).
56* to 110 yards
52* to 120 yards

My 60* is a 588 BECU. ive always used the copper because i felt it was soft and light(which could very well be the wrong assessment). but it worked great around the green and chipping comfort is a big deal to me.

I have been looking at the CG12 and wanted personal explanations of the difference between Black Pearl and Chrome?
also, if you prefer another brand over Cleveland, say Titleist, please explain....

also, say I have a 56* and a 52* strickly for full strokes, like a typical iron. Would you continue to use a standard sand wedge finish, or have something more similiar to my irons?

i say STAY AWAY FROM THE CG12. it's real easy to chunk from what I've seen. it's such a huge club. I personally like the CG10 if you're gonna stay with Cleveland. BUT if you're looking to change over, have you ever tried the Vokey wedges? I have a vokey 56 and that's my club for whatever. I use it for more flop shots than my 60 CG 10.

As for the finish, supposedly 1 can rust at a quicker rate which would let you put more spin on the ball. I know a lot of people who put their wedges into a cup of coke and let it sit over night to strip the finish away so they can get that extra spin on the ball.

Meh, I like my cg12s. But then again, I have only hit one other kind, the 588 dsg in 56. The difference in Black Pearl and Chrome is just color, the BP doesn't reflect sun at address I guess. But I have the chrome, and that doesn't happen, so it is just a preference. You should look at the newer cg12 dsgs they loook nice.

All three of my Cleveland wedges are Black Pearl, and the only difference between them and the chrome is the color/finish. That being said, the only reason I have Black Pearl is because the first of my three wedges was a gift from a tournament, and I bought the otehr two the same finish so they would all match. The finish does tend to wear off (turns a dull silverish color) on the face and on the bottom. This is especially true for your sand wedge seeing as the sand will lighten up the finsh after only a few uses.

I had a CG10 and a 588, and I now have a couple CG12 DSG... they are the same size (the 10 and 12)... the 588 was a touch smaller... but the CG's are very close. I have no trouble chunking them. Also, the one that will rust up real easy is the one I have... the CG12 DSG RTG finish... it is only the DSG ones that come with the RTG finish. The black pearl is decent... it will wear a bit in the hitting area and on the sole, but I don't really like chrome wedges (looks wise)... it's all personal preference. The CG12 seem to have a little better feel than the 10... don't know why? They also spin the ball a little more, but still not as much as a vokey. I think the CG12's are great wedges and you couldn't go wrong, especially if you have liked other cleveland wedges.

I think the Black Pearl is more of an oxide finish ( most companies' black clubs are). They should be a little less "clicky than chrome, but you probably won't feel it as much on a wedge than say a 3-iron.

The oxide finishes can rust, especially in warm humid places by the sea.

The biggest difference is glare. You might think this isn't a big deal until you have a shot were the sun is blasting off your club face, and you'll be wishing for a duller finish. This was the main reason I don't use a stainless steel putter anymore...

Big M, really? For some reason I just don't like the feel and look of the CG12 at address. Maybe it's all in my head. I like the results it produces, but I honestly trust using my vokey 56 with a more open blade and stance than trusting that i'll hit a clean wedge shot with the cg-10. I think the only highlight I've ever had with my CG was when I had to flop a shot out of the rough and onto an elevated green that resulted in an eagle 2. I like the ease of hitting a full shot with the CG10, but when I open the blade to flop it, it just seems like a lot more work than doing it with the vokey. but you've obviously been playing a lot longer and are a better ball striker than I am..so maybe it's just me.

I have the cg12 56 and I am not very fond of it. I bought it last year and there is nothing wrong with it, but it just doesnt feel good in my hands. It feels like a brick on a stick.

I like my nike wedges much better.

Like others have said before there is no difference in Black Pearl and Chrome other then aesthetics.

I wouldn't go on making those outlandish claims... my ballstriking can be pretty bad sometimes.

Seriously though... I just don't like the looks of the Vokey and the way they shred balls when they are new... but they are certainly a good club. I never had too much trouble opening up the CG10's but the CG12 w/DSG (dynamic sole grind) is made to open up real easy, and they do. I am MORE confident opening the 12's w/DSG up than I have been any other wedge. Before I would still get a little nervous from tight lies, but not now... these babies are silky smooth and crisp at hitting those shots. On a side note... wedges are so personal, you just have to play what looks and feels best to you.

I have some Spin Mills. I'd suggest you look at the Callaways and Mizunos. They're forged while the Titleists are not. The Titleists are softer, but the Callaways and Mizunos are crisper.

I personally found chrome finish to be ever so slightly clickier than oil can or black pearl finish. I don't know if it's just in my head but that is just me... I find oil can and black pearl to be softer than chrome.

I would give serious consideration to Vokey SM, Vokey 200 and Mizuno MP-R or MP-T wedges.

I have some Spin Mills. I'd suggest you look at the Callaways and Mizunos. They're forged while the Titleists are not. The Titleists are softer, but the Callaways and Mizunos are crisper.

The way the club is made (forged or not) has virtually no impact on how it feels... it is the material used that matters. That being said... I have heard good things about both of your recomendations... I would like to try some Callaway wedges sometime soon.
