Well, I want to start walking courses more, primarily b/c with a couple of kids and sitting at a desk all day, I figure it will be some of the only exercise I have time for; therefore I bought a nice Ogio Grom (thanks TST Reviews) but the stumbling block I am hitting now is that the other members of my regular group, who still use heavy cart bags do not want to walk the course and mistakenly believe walking to be slower....anybody else run into a similar dilemna....did you get your buddies walking or just walk alone?

In my Grom:

I ALWAYS walk, and included in my bag is a weighted club and a 10 pd dumbbell. I have played in some groups that have a couple guys that use carts. And to be honest I am usually waiting on them. But before you start walking make sure that you invest in a great walking bag, with shoulder straps that conform to your body. You are certain to see an improvment in your game and you will just feel better. As I am walking to my next shot it gives me plenty of time to decide on how I am going to execute it.

Also, I hate it when people abuse carts and tear up the course... It is cart path only for a reason old man.... (or young man)

I always walk. It lets me calm down a bit before my next shot and concentrate on how I want to execute. The couple times I have been in a cart it feels like a race to get to the ball and hit it. You dont have to ride in a cart to have a speedy pace of play.

I prefer to walk, there are some courses that dont allow it, which sucks because i dont want to spend the $15 - $20 for the cart, others that I just wont walk due to the layout. Its no slower, its your choice which you choose. It doesnt matter age or anything, you do what you want.

Yeah, i forget sometimes that alot of courses have riding only policies before 1 or 2 to combat conjestion. But i like what bethpage does on the black course in that they make you walk, and if you dont keep up, they kick you off.

Most of my golfing buddies walk so I don't have the problem you do but I wouldn't worry about it too much. They'll get the hint once they notice you are always waiting for them.

Added bonus, you'll feel better and be in better shape due to your walking and it could lead to better scores so you might beat them too.

For someone who plays quickly it will not matter walking or riding. Riding will sometimes help the slower player speed up slightly.

Walking is the way to go. I have have dropped 35lbs since the beginning of the year with just diet and walking the golf course instead of riding.

I always walk when the option is available, and I am usually waiting for whoever has a cart.

If you know what you're doing and have no one ahead of you, a cart could be faster. I think someone posted a few months ago saying he played 18 holes in 90 minutes using a cart on his own. But since you've been around here enough, I trust you know the rules of fast play.

Congrats on dropping the 35 pounds. That's awsome. I have heard that weight loss is truly the hardest of all.

personally speaking I hate to ride for various reasons....

1. when in a cart you always have to ride with the guy your playing with to scope his ball out and normally always have to take a few clubs of your own to your ball (seems never to work where both of you are reasonably in the same area) and if this is the case your basically walking back to the cart anyways so why not walk in the 1st place.

2. as above, when you grap a few extra clubs you have to lay them on the ground which in the early mornings makes the grips wet, always drying them off or carrying a towel to lay down on the ground.

3. when you hit a bad shot I feel walking helps you clear your mind better and not stay uptight for your next.

if I were you I would just walk, (at least attempt to once to see how it goes) and who really cares if they think you'll slow them down, unless they are low cappers they won't be that much ahead of you anyways imo

my friends all cart and I walk. I used to cart, but decided I wasn't going to let them ruin my round of golf. Also, I find conversation isn't so easy in a cart (I have more time to tell jokes walking!)

I walk every round of golf I play by myself, and ride almost every round of golf I play with others. I have been playing since I was 12, and never rode a cart until college, when all my friends that play wouldn't think of walking a course.

My girlfriend plays golf and we always ride. I don't mind it though because she gets cranky when she gets tired... so riding is a lifesaver!

In terms of it being healthy, this is very true. I walked with a single a few months ago who had lost 30+ lbs. 30 Lbs is a lot, but to make it even more impressive, the single was a 5'5" Asian woman who probably weighed in at 110... so it was the kind of weight loss which would be very noticeable and impressive. Her husband is a golf pro... and it showed because she was playing from the whites and put a beating on my group of guys...

The only time I ride is when I'm playing a course I've never played before or on vacation. I once walked a course I've never played and it nearly killed me. They should have had a sign at the first tee saying 'If you can't walk up a 70 degree incline for longer than 5 minutes, get a cart.' It wasn't so bad on the first 9 holes going down the valley, but the last 9 holes coming in up the valley. Ahug!

I prefer to walk. However a torn Achilles tendon and surgery last year, may force me into a cart for at least the beginning of the year.

I never understand why my friends insist on:

1) Riding in a cart

and

2) Not playing from the tips

I agree with the whole cart thing (walking is definately my preference)... but how good are your friends? I usually don't play the tips as I don't want to struggle all day. I look for something in the 6500 range. Many courses I play max out around 7000... and I would think that it's not worth playing waaaayyyy back there unless you average 260+ off the tee and carry a 5 or less.

The amatuer tour I play on has us play 6500ish for my flight as well. (rant) Just for the record... I hate when BAD golfers play from the WRONG tees... nothing worse than playing behind a foursome with one good golfer and three other guys who are constantly looking for balls because they couldn't make the forced carry, etc. and they are HOLDING ME UP! (rant over) ... not accusing anyone of this, just a note

    • @Philip Belgium,  If I haven't already, Welcome to TST.  Your injury sounds serious and I hope you fully recover.   Thanks for sharing your story.  ..... each day get 1-2% better.   (A ray of sunshine and a positive outlook)
    • Day 91 (1  Aug 25) - Pre-tournament practice round today…had some great up and downs for par saves.  Rain came in this evening so it will be a totally different playing course tomorrow.
    • Jesus, when he keeps saying scissoring moment, ugh that is a horrible sounding phrase. Just makes me cringe. It doesn't help my mind went to Mr. Garrison from South Park. 🤣 If you know you know.  I think for the most part, golf shaft companies have gotten this figured out. They ask questions like, what tempo do you swing at. The whole scissor terminology sounds like they want to stand out a bit.  Yea, golfers load the golf shaft differently, and different bend profiles can help out. I do think swing speed matters as well. You probably want a golf shaft with lower torque if you swing faster.
    • Played 9 holes, shot a 39.  Kind of got around. Everything between the trees, so in play. Short game was rusty. Got to get back on that. Greens were stupidly slow because they got a lot of rain yesterday and probably couldn't cut them down. Usually in the summer they are firm and pretty fast for how sloped they are. Got to work on face to path a bit.
    • We agree here. Top of the car has a forward force, bottom of the car experiences a backward force via the braking. Both about the COM (somewhere in between). Result is a rotational flip. Since the forward force is still higher the car probably still globally travels forward. Sure, pretty basic. You really think there are deliberate twist forces applied? Like forcing the club head forward and simultaneously forcing grip end in the opposite direction? Heck I don't think we even slow down the grip end deliberately let alone force it the other way. Sorry, if I am missing something here. The orientation change is simple incidental because there is different rate of global movement of grip vs. clubhead throughout the swing. I also happen to think the best swings have the least amount of differential movement between the two end in the impact zone.  In my defense, I never thought one could do justice in covering all aspects of a golf swing in a paragraphs or two to begin with. Especially not with grade school physics..😜 Okay.
