Just bought this driver from Callaway Pre-Owned and have played it for two rounds. The sound it makes when I hit it is a dull thud..  and that about sums up the way it feels as well. I didn't hit it too badly, but I don't feel like it was that much longer than my XR 16 Pro. Any change there's something wrong with this driver?

Pretty sure that's what I play.

Why do you expect it to be "longer" than your other driver?

Newer/better technology. I read that it was one of the longest drivers tested. But that's not really my concern. I'm just worried that it could be somehow damaged. I had a friend hit it and he's also a pretty good golfer and he felt the same way. Each hit just feels dead. The sound of the ball being hit is a dull thud and you feel almost nothing as well. I just thought that a driver that was supposed to be for low to mid handicappers would have a better sound and feel.

But if you get the same sound and feeling when you hit the ball, then I guess it's normal.

I’m just saying that no driver in the past 10 years is really that much longer than any other.

Get fit and make sure the shaft and head are the best for you.

Callaway worked hard to get that sound. Many people like it.

According to their PR team they were going for a call back to the old "wood" woods. They didn't want a "Pingie" sound. They describe it as muted. You can read about it on their website. The A.I. face and all.

I can't tell you if yours sounds correct or not. Callaway Pre-Owned is pretty reputable though. Don't think they'd sell you a broken one or a knock-off.

I can tell you, as @iacas has mentioned. The ruling bodies that govern drivers haven't changed the rules in quite a while so there's only so much to gain in terms of distance from a new driver. There is literally only so much the engineers can really do. Even the A.I. Engineers.

What you're saying makes sense. I've been playing this driver for a month now and it's by far the best driver I've ever owned. I don't know if I had an off day the first time I hit it, but I'm hitting it farther and straighter than my old XR16.

It’s the low spin version so it might sound different

Yep, one of the most dull sounding drivers I ever hit was the original SLDR. Super forward and low CG to reduce spin.

I agree with @iacas, driver tech hasn’t changed much over the past 10 years. All you get is very slightly better ball speed retention on off center hits. The best thing you can do is get fit to optimize your launch conditions.

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
