Second Set of Clubs for Vacation Property

Hello,

I’m setting up a second set of clubs to leave up north at our vacation/retirement property. For any of you who have a backup or second set of clubs, do you try to match the makeup of your primary set or do you not worry about it and build the bag with whatever seems to work?

 

We bought a couple acres of land in northern Wisconsin that we have been slowly working on and getting ready for retirement. Last summer some relatives were up visiting and a couple of them wanted to play some golf. So I started thinking (dangerous) and began to assemble a bag for up north. I found a set of Adams CB3 irons, added a couple Cobra hybrids I had at home, threw in a Taylormade M2 driver that got bumped out of my primary bag, added a Cleveland wedge I had in the basement, picked up a used Cleveland 3-wood from a local shop, found a slightly used Ping 58deg Glide wedge with the eye grind at a different local shop, and added a spare putter I had next to the basement wedge. A mishmatched bag of sorts. I might swap out the CB3 irons for some Ping G20 irons that I’ve had for sale, waiting to hit the range first with both sets to see which work better for me.

 

My primary bag of clubs is more cohesive, but I haven’t played much the last couple of years so hopefully they will still work for me once I start getting my swing back in order.

 

Anyway, just some rambling thoughts while wondering if anyone matches two sets of bags, or if you don’t.

Most of my life I wasn't able to do this...I would trade in one set of clubs when I bought the new one, and generally it was an extravagance I couldn't justify. Now, I do have 2 identical sets of clubs, so I can keep one at my course and have another for travel, etc. The duplicates are in the iron set only. I "recycle" old wedges (bad idea, maybe), hybrids, FW, and driver for the second bag, however.

I basically keep the "old" set at the vacation house. It does mean I occasionally need to ship some irons to the house, or a wood, but that isn't that big of a deal. Rich people problems.

I change and tinker with my main set. I could never have a plan to have 2 of the same sets.

One of my dad's former colleagues had a house in South Carolina, a house in New York and another one somewhere else - maybe out west. He had three identical sets all the way through from driver to putter. They were not just a cheap set either. Some Yamaha graphite shafted irons in the mid-90s - probably $2k a set at the time, just for the irons. He could afford it. 

I live in NY and my parents are in the UK. I have an old set that I leave there and use if I'm going over not for a golf trip. If I'm playing something important then I'll bring my current set over. I can barely justify buying one set let alone two or three. My irons I get upright and long, so I'm assuming that the value on trade in or on ebay would be pretty low. Consequently I have several sets, but the ones that aren't my current gamers are all 8+ years old. Fine for a knock about with my parents, but not really suitable for tournament golf.

I keep a similar set of irons and the same putter back in NY, the rest of the set does not match up as well, but it’s good quality stuff and I get around just fine with it.

Here in UT, I have two sets of the exact same irons, and wedges that match up almost exactly.  I use the 2nd set of irons/wedges for the range and travel.

I've never sought out to matched two sets, but I have kept a second bag at a summer/vaca home. Whenever I put new equipment in my primary set, this would slide the existing (woods, irons, etc.) into bag #2. A one way process for the most part, but putters have been known to reemerge the primary bag.

The basis of my backup bag is TaylorMade SLDR irons, which TST kindly selected me to test out in 2014.

The emergent bag is all TM, including the bag itself. Irons are 4i-AW, plus a TP SW and LW. Add in a Burner SuperFast driver | an RBG Stage.2 3HL | 3H and 4H Burner Rescues (2007). Finally, a TPA.VIII putter from 1985, the year TM bought the TPA company.

Yes, in a tournament I would need to leave out one club.

I have played all the clubs for at least a few rounds, just not all at once. Bag mainly gets used by visitors who come to town traveling light, and need clubs so we can go out and play.

Whatever seems to work, I guess. In my case, I've gone to graphite shafts in my MAX irons and MD wedges, so the steel shafts might be a big hard to handle.

In your case, consider an all star bag of clubs that have worked in past. Probably plug in those G20 irons. A round with former clubs can have a nostalgic glow to it.

I have enough clubs to give someone a full set and still have a backup bag and some spares. The joys of being a club enthusiast. My backup set is my previous clubs that have been replaced over the past few years. I've spent too much money on my primary set and don't really have a good reason to replicate it. Perhaps in the future I'll buy duplicates of certain clubs for a practice bag, but that's all I can really think of.
