On Tuesday I was playing alone and missed the 5th green at Arrowhead Lakes to the left. The ball hit the cart path and bounced nearly onto the 6th tee box.

It was lying near the cart path and near one of those signs that a lot of golf courses have which show the length of the hole from different tee boxes and a little map of what the hole looks like.

The sign was right in my way. I could not hit a normal lob wedge toward the flag. ... A shot by the way that I'm pretty comfortable with.

Instead I opened the face of my 60 degree wedge and tried to hit an abnormally high flopper over the sign to the green. The ball caught the bunker and and things went badly from there.

My question is: Would I have been eligible for relief from the sign?

I know that Immovable obstructions are artificial objects that are on the course for a good reason but aren't meant to interfere with the playing of our game. If an immovable obstruction interferes with your lie, stance and/or swing then you're eligible for free relief. BUUUUUTTTTTT...  The sign didn't interfere with my lie, stance or swing. It only interfered with the trajectory and normal flight of the ball had I hit the shot I'm comfortable with.

So, I didn't take relief because I didn't think I was eligible for it.
Was I right?

You were right, sad to say.  Without any local rule in effect, you only get free relief for line of play when you ball is on the putting green.

That's what I figured.

Thanks.
Good news is I made the correct call. Bad news is I didn't hit a very good shot. 🤪

So when we see a tour player get relief from a TV tower is that because it is not a normal part of the course while the hole marker above is a normal part of the course?

It is because the tour allows relief under model local rule F-23, for Temporary Immovable Obstructions.  Without that local rule, they wouldn't get relief either.

I think this is fair because they are bringing in objects not normally on the course, like those hole signs, or maybe a random maintenance building.

I had this situation in a tournament a few months ago. A competitor hit his ball just behind a building on the course. It wasn't something like a weather safety building, but an old shack that just sits between two holes. The scorecard, nor any local rules handed out mentioned that building for line of site relief. He had to play his ball as it lies since it didn't interfere with his golf swing. I think that was the correct call.

Yeah, so Happy should have gotten relief from the tower that fell on the green.🤪

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
