Hi everyone,

this is my first post. I’m 48 years old, both kids are in college so I have more free time on my hands. Why not pick up golf? Seemed like a good idea.

I’ve golfed before. Maybe twice a year for the last 30 years. Whenever friends or family wanted to play. Nothing serious.

I took a lesson from a local pro back in December and he gave me some general advice. I have a golf net in my backyard so I started practicing and recording my swing. I live in the Phoenix AZ area. That lead me down a rabbit hole of suck. I noticed every thing I was doing wrong. That lead me to buying a bunch of training aids that have probably made me worse. Just got back from the driving range and at best I haven’t improved. At worst I’ve regressed.

When I first recorded my swing I noticed I was flipping the club at impact. Then I noticed I was casting. Then I noticed I wasn’t using my hips enough. All thes revelations took place over a couple of months.

so, I’m lost. No idea what to do or what to work on. Any have a similar journey? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Welcome to The Sand Trap!

Best advice I can give is find a quality instructor and work with them on one piece at a time.

Go slowly and learn how to practice properly.

Good chances are some of the things you mentioned like flipping the club are reactions or byproducts of other things that already happened in the swing so you need a quality instructor to identify flaws in the stance, grip, backswing, etc instead of just "trying not to flip the club at impact"

If you want quality online lessons, Evolvr.com is great for that, but a Member Swing thread on here is a fine place to start as well.

Thank you both! I will upload a video tomorrow.

Also, learn how to properly film your swing.

Welcome to TSR.  I’m not qualified to give swing advice other than ”Get a series of lessons”. 1 session with a pro is better than none, but not much better.

Are you looking for a lessons response or something else? I'd also suggest getting a hybrid iron set, like Cobra's, Cleveland and Wilson a good place to start.

More of a lessons response. I will upload a video soon. Thank you!

Upload it to YouTube first and then paste the link. It will auto embed.

Please don't upload videos directly to the site. Also, for what you're now trying to do… please create a topic here:

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
