Hi all, wanted to introduce myself and open up to any advice!

Brand new to the world of golf, the closest being a stag doo at Top Golf and some mini golf as a giggle.

Fast approaching 40 in a couple of months and need a hobby which is a bit more active and isn't just sitting around watching men kick a football!

Any advice on starting out, what clubs to look out for, and avoid, any essential clothing, what I should make sure I have and what I should 100% stay away from.

I'm most nervous about stepping onto a course for the first time so would more than likely want to get some practice and guidance from someone skilled at making sure I don't embarrass myself!

Welcome to the Sand Trap! I thought everyone in Scotland was born with a 3 handicap. 😜 check out this thread for the basics. Erik started it during COVID, but it’s a great primer for revisiting the basics.

If you don't embarrass yourself a bit, you aren't doing it right.

Can't +1 this enough. If you're starting new, you won't "get" all of this right away or anything. But this is the best intro course in how to swing the golf club out there. Def that's freely available! Of course if you get going and feel like you're going to really keep playing, finding a good coach and taking regular lessons is your best investment.

I wouldn't worry about clubs much. Maybe a static fitting calculator online to see if you should be playing longer or shorter than standard clubs (e.g. here). But then just find used irons and wedges with that length and a used driver, 5w, and putter.
