Curb Your Enthusiasm Golf Tip

This week's episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 12, Episode 3) is a hoot. Larry is sitting on a bench watching a pro give a lesson and starts paying special attention to the tip being provided, "Vertical Drop, Horizontal Tug." The pro gets pissed off and tells him to book a lesson, which he refuses to do. On the course he's blasting his drives (he hits a guy in the fairway he thought he couldn't reach) and shoots his best round of the season although he does get called on the carpet by the president of the club. (He has a rather unusual solution to that as well.)

I tried it...it works. Vertical drop...horizontal tug, the secret to golf!

I call it "throwing" rather than "drop" which implies that it's gravity… but… yeah.

This is OT, but in a bit of cosmic irony, the other guy in the cart in the clip @iacas shared, Richard Lewis, died today:

Comedian and actor Richard Lewis, famous for his work in movies like “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” and television shows including “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” has died, according to his publicist Jeff Abraham. He was 76.

Yeah, I just saw the news item on him an hour ago. He had Parkinson's. A funny, funny guy.  His stand-up act was unique. He always held a sheaf of disorganized papers in his hand as if he had made notes that he was referring to. I'm pretty sure there wasn't anything on them. עליו השלום

And during that golf tip show Richard told Larry he was going to put him in his will, and they argued about who would live longer!

"Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he's been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I'll never forgive him."

    • Haha this is true, but I’ll be 53 this year and was thinking man it would be nice not to have to carry or push this cart uphill during the humid summer in Kentucky.  Hey at least I’m still walking the course!   I did go on a long hike yesterday at red river gorge with just a backpack, it was nice not carrying a m16/203 grenade launcher and ammo.. sorta
    • I'm kind of surprised that this hasn't gotten more coverage. I get that the Masters was just taking over all of golf's media coverage for a week or two, but even still I thought this might get more run.
    • Just ordered a box of the Snell 3.0's.
    • Take a divot? With a practice swing? Never. So then bunt it, what’s wrong with that?
    • My first suggestion is "play" that hole every time you go to the practice range. Every time you go to the driving range, make that hole your first swing. Pick out a target at your driving range that is 180-190 out and hit that shot as your very first swing of your practice session. Get used to hitting that shot first.  Then set aside approximately a half dozen balls and a few times per practice session, hit that shot again. Perhaps whenever you switch practice mods. Going from block training with a 6 iron to block training with a PW? ... before you do, hit that shot again.  Keep hitting that shot in practice, both when loosened up and when fresh out of the car. It will get easier.  My second suggestion is to make sure you carry a club for that shot.  Get yourself on a launch monitor with your 4 iron and measure front/back dispersion as well as left/right dispersion.  Try out a 4 hybrid, a 5-wood, maybe a 7-wood, maybe even driving iron. You could consider a hy-wood too. Basically find something that you are super confident in. Heck, it could be a mini-driver... No matter what the club is pick the one that gives you the highest percentage chance of hitting that shot right out of the box.  My last suggestion is to give yourself a break on that hole. Re-evaluate what a "good" score on that hole is. If it's a bogey, maybe that's fine.
