So I was playing a par three course by myself this week, and there was a slow threesome in front of me. I had nothing else to do, so rather than trying to play through I was playing two balls. I get to 15th hole and hit my first ball just short of the green, and hit my second tee ball. I hit it off the toe and it is going short and to the right...until it hits the cart path lands on the green and rolls towards the hole. It stops about two feet short.

Now if it goes in do I get to count it as a hole in one? I am assuming no, because obviously I could make adjustments from my first tee ball.

yeh i'd call it a hole in one, but not a competitive hole in won, possibly a difference there.

hole in one is a hole in one. but if it were a competitive match, your only allowed one ball to play ... odviously...

I wouldn't. At best, it'd be a three (if you declared your first ball unplayable).

You know, if you play 100 rounds in your life and hit a hole in one... you still call it a hole in one. Now, if you just played 100 of the same hole over and over, same thing right?

If you can hit a tiny hole from 150 yards away, then you should get credit for it. Now, buy me a beer. :)

"Count" it as a hole in one in what sense? Count it for what?

I would say that I have knocked one in off the tee before, but it was just a practice shot. I think that is pretty honest, and doesn't imply that you hit it in the regular course of play.

The same thing happened to me a month ago. I was scoring two balls behind slow people. On hole 7, my first went on the green and my second went within a foot. I probably wouldn't have admired it as much as a normal hole in one (and I was alone too!) but I probably would still call it one. Oh yeah, the hole was only about 95 yards too! If I told my friends I probably would explain the details, considering my friend (when he was 15) told me he would buy me a car if I ever got a hole in one! I'd let him decide!

Side question: I got a double eagle once with a 7-iron on a par 5 hole under 500 yards (475?). I personally don't admire it as much as a more difficult double eagle since the hole should really have been a long par 4.

I would call it a hole in one, but I wouldn't feel as good about it as if I had hit one with my first shot. Plus, I wouldn't tell anyone that it was my second ball.

I agree, the key to your question is the fact that: 1. It was your second shot.

2. IT DIDN'T GO IN!! That is not a hole in one. Keep trying. And to be honest, I cannot believe the responses by the majority of you "real" golfers...... Since when does landing the ball within a foot of the cup serve/count as a hole in one? Last time I checked, a hole in one is just that, first shot off the tee goes INTO the hole, not a foot away from it!! Thats how I made mine, and I'm sure you all can do the same.

I've had a hole in one but it was on a course with an extra 3 holes across the lake. I still counted it as a hole in one, thing is I never saw it go in as there was a mound in front of the green and I hit it to the left and it roled down the banking and into the hole. The 3 extra holes are par3 holes about 200 yards for 2 of the holes and 95 yards for the first one. It was the 200 yards one I holed. So it doesn't matter to me if it was 2 balls, or 3 extra holes that don't count on the card its still a hole in one!!!

I think you are missing the point of the post. I know better than anyone that it didn't go in. The post isn't a question of whether you can call a kick in birdie a hole in one. It was a question about playing two balls to a hole, and I was relaying a shot that made me think about a second shot hole in one.

I see both sides of the issue and I still am at a loss as what to do WHEN it happens to me (I plan on making several holes in one over my golfing career, mostly on first balls but also a couple on shots like this ) If I was playing two balls and got both down for par, no one is going to argue that the second one wasn't really a par. I think the only way I would count a second ball as a hole in one in the truest sense would be if I was to play ball one into the hole. Then go back to the tee and play ball two...which considering how slow things were going, I probably could have.
