I think it would be a "hole in one" and you could mark it down as whatever you wanted. but hitting off the tee box and it going in the hole on a par 3 = hole in one.

I think you are missing the point of the post. I know better than anyone that it didn't go in. The post isn't a question of whether you can call a kick in birdie a hole in one. It was a question about playing two balls to a hole, and I was relaying a shot that made me think about a second shot hole in one.

I can make an argument against this.

The second ball (as Erik implied) was the ball in play. If you want to declare the first one out of play (unplayable), you are hitting 3 off the tee and that's the best score your can make. I take the same position on the pars. For a real hole-in-one, I think there are some other things required like:
  • During the course of an 18 hole round and
  • Witnesses

Who defines "real"?

So if I am on the 11th hole, and I make a hole in one. But before I finish up 14 the sky opens up and there is lightning that prevents me from finishing my round, I don't get a hole in one? What if I am only playing nine holes? League golf is often only nine holes and I am pretty sure they count hole outs made there. As far as witnesses, meh. I don't need a witness to hit a hole in one. I know I could lie about it, but the first person I am lying to is myself. so I respectfully disagree with your need of witnesses. If people don't believe you hit a hole in one, then you need to evaluate the people you tell or the things you have told people in the past. What if I paid two greens fees, and was legitimately playing two balls a hole? What if I follow the letter and spirit of the rules of golf to a tee on both balls? The point is, this wasn't a tournament round and not a competitive round, but that isn't a requirement to having a hole in one. I think I lean to the side of having it count more as a hole in one. However, because I could make adjustments to prior shots I don't think it would count the same. Also if I hit the first ball in the hole would it matter?

If it was your second ball, then it is not a "hole in one". Its still an awesome golf shot, but it's not a shot holed out in one swing during a competitive round. You can mark it as whatever you like on your scorecard, but in all honesty, you know it wasn't a legitimate hole in one.

With that being said, it would be an excellent golf shot from 100+ yds rather than an ace.

The rules of golf.

He didn't say you had to FINISH the round. And nine holes would be fine too. The key part was during a stipulated, actual round of golf.

I don't agree with the witnesses part either, but if I ever get a hole in one, I'm going to stand on the tee and call someone over or call the pro shop before I leave the tee if I'm alone. :)

You can't play two balls "under the letter and spirit of the rules" because playing two balls is basically expressly forbidden.

The point is, this wasn't a tournament round and not a competitive round, but that isn't a requirement to having a hole in one.

The reason why you can't play two balls? You might learn something from the first one - where to aim, what club to use, how hard to swing, what the wind does, how the green reacts, etc. At the very least, it's practice, which is forbidden.

For me a Hole-in-One is first shot on the hole. Anything else is a Hole-in-'X'. Witnesses aren't necessary since this is a Game of Honor. However I do have a question for those who have a legit Hole-in-One: If you went to the clubhouse to give the news and info did they ask any questions? Many times these shots and the club used are recorded on Course/Local News websites and in the newspapers. I would think they would want to verify it was done under Rules of Golf to make it legit.

its a hole-in-one by my standards, people are way too finicky as to what is a hole-in-one, everyone, except for drinkers, gives me a hard time about my pro v-1 rule hole-in-ones

I was asked my name, what club I hit, what hole, and did I have any witnesses. After I informed him I had two witnesses, he gave me a form to fill out, I had my two witnesses sign it, the pro signed it I got my name in the newspaper and I recieved a certificate from the V.S.G.A. for a certified hole in one.

Like Iacas said about testing the conditions, Your second ball "hole in one" is similar to putting two balls and counting the second!!

I see where you are coming from, if the second ball went in, I would say it is a hole in one with an asterisk..... a hole in one not in regulation. Just my opinion.

i'd consider anything hit from the teebox straight into the hole a hole-in-one no matter how many other shots you've taken.

If you hit 5 balls Out of Bounds and hit your 6th ball in the hole, would you putt a 1 down on the scorecard??? Because I thought that's what a hole in one is, a 1 on the scorecard.

no, but i consider it a hole-in-one after your first "hit" from the teebox not always your first stroke.
