Just got back from the range, about 3 balls into my 75 this guy on my left gets a cell call goes directly behind me and starts talking... Not a big deal I think, he'll be done soon enough. 40 minutes later he still talking as I am finishing up my balls, not just talking... Talking loudly, laughing loud all in the middle of my backswing.. it got to the point I couldn't even keep my head clear because I was so pissed.

I know it's only the range, but a 40 minute phone call about 2 feet behind me while I'm working on releasing the club and other things really got on my nerves... The worst part, he was speaking ****ing korean.

It wasn't just the phone call, it was how loud he was and how he simply didn't care enough to walk 20 feet down the range to where know one was, but had to stand directly behind me.

After hitting my last golf ball, I turned and gave him the thumbs up... "Thanks for the 40 minute phone call jackass". He just smiled. /rant

I feel your pain. People just need to use common sense with cell phones. I think it is ok to carry them, just be courteous with them.

Seriously. You kind of lose a lot of your right to complain (not all, but a lot) if you didn't even ask him to move. It's not like he was in a movie theater or something. I don't expect pure silence on the

range .

this is probably the easiest and most appropriate thing to do. He probably didnt realize that you were upset.

You could have just said, "excuse me sir, could you please go somewhere else to talk on the phone?"

Just ignore it, next you will be saying "everyone at the driving range has to hush during my swing".

I feel your rant stands little credibility, if it bothered you *that* much *you* should of moved bays.

LMAO, there's a difference between noise (which doesn't bother me) and loud phone conversation 2 feet behind me... I should have been bothered more though, picked all my balls and moved, that would have been the right move...

I would have asked him to move I guess, but it never even came to my mind and he didn't speak English.

2 Feet behind you would probably be close to you hitting the guy, I think thats a little exagerated.

You don't know that. Most people in this country - no matter how recently they may or may not have been on "the boat" - understand "please" and pointing.

absolutely less annoyed, I had no idea what the conversation was about.... Maybe if he was talking business or to his kids or something I would have been less annoyed.

I also turned and looked at him numerous times, but he would just look away and keep laughing... He wasn't only annoying me, but at least 3 other people.

And then you ask in front of the other 3 people. I think most people would stop if 4 people asked for it. And if he doesn't, you go and get whoever is in charge.

It isn't like an annoying guy in your foursome. There are plenty of folks you can go to when there's a problem at the range.

Funny, my mom always taught me two wrongs don't make a right. I guess your session was not important enough to walk over, say "excuse me" and proceed to ask him to lower his voice? Or ask him to please take the conversation, elswhere?

The topic of his conversation nor the language he spoke in should have been of importance. The fact that he was annoying you, was. You should handled it so that forty five minutes later, you're not calling him a "jackass."

Cell phones? Meh.

Smokers. The stench of a cigarette will throw off my swing a hell lot more than a cell phone conversation would.

Case in point, last Friday - some midlife crisis blue collar hick decides to light one up right behind me, and the wind is blowing in my direction. He doesn't go anywhere, he just proceeds to swing with cigarette in mouth. Children were around as well.

I was hoping he would go somewhere else, but he didn't. After a minute, I asked him to move it somewhere else out of respect for others. He just glares at me and says, "Dis a public property! I can do whatevah i wan!" Asking doesn't always work, as you can see.

After that, I just grabbed my bucket, moved upwind, and notified the range guy. I saw him put it out after a quick conversation with the range guy. I just didn't feel like getting into some awkward altercation at the range, then continue with him behind me with long heavy metal sticks and a pisspoor attitude.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
