Leaving my Beginner set of Irons behind.....

I have a set of graphite-shaft slazenger clubs. They have been great for me this first year, but I am ready to upgrade. I have already replaced the driver with a Nike Sasquatch Sumo.....but I am unsure what irons I should get. I am looking at not exceeding the $500 mark......my skill level doesnt warrant spending anymore. I am looking, and have tried 5 sets that I like, and I want your opinions and experiences to help pick out the best set for me. They are:

Taylormade RAC OS2's
Ping i5's
Callaway X18's
Mizuno MX19's
Nike Slingshots

Out of those, I'd narrow it down to the RAC OS2's, X18's, and MX19's...

I'd probably go with the RAC OS2's.

Try the 2007 Cobra FP's out. They are about $349 for steel and $399 for graphite. Pretty much identical to the 2008 model, so if you can't find the 2007 model to demo just hit the 2008 ones and see how they feel. And if you like them you can just order them through TGW.com

If you don't like those, I would go for the RAC's or the MX-19's. I've tried the X18's and they just didn't do it for me. I'm not a big fan of uniflex shafts.

Why not go to more of a players iron at a 7 handicap? I'm a 12 and I liked my RAC OS2 for a while, but you just can not work the ball with them (ex. I can't hit a knockdown shot or a cut with them...just too much offset.)

But if you still want a lot of offset and cavity back, go with the RAC OS2 for sure. They were great for what I got out of them...very easy to hit and SO forgiving.

If you want more of a players club the R7 irons are only like 450 dollars right now -- pretty great deal.

Thanks for the opinions! I was leaning towards the OS2's anyways. I want to stick with something easy to hit for sure. I havent gotten into putting anything other than backspin on the ball (intentionally) at this point. I have only been playing about a year, but seemed to pick it up descently fast. I was planning on the Nike driver.....but after researching around a bit more, I believe I will go with the Taylormade Burner driver. Again, thanks for all your opinions. Keep em coming!

The Ping G10 is the most forgiving driver I tried and I tried a few.

ummmmm you're a 7 handicap. i think your skill level warrants anything out there

I basically just point and shoot though. My low scores come from being very good at putting, and decently accurate with my irons. 500 is my limit, and I want irons that are still forgiving.

Get the RAC OS2 then...I highly doubt your a 7 handicap if you just "aim and shoot" because 7 handicaps are shooting in the 70's consistently.

You can highly doubt it all you want....doesn't affect me. I shot in the 90's when I first started. Took some lessons, and I haven't shot over 80 in my last 11 rounds. By point and shoot, I just meant I cant purposely fade/draw the ball at will. I pick a spot, shoot for it, and am fairly good at hitting the spot. Thanks for th opinions.

I say more power to you. If you can pick a spot and hit it SWEET! I think that is the problem with most golfers. They are trying to draw, or now fade thanks to Tiger, instead of just playing for a good shot.

I played to a 7 handicap a few years back. I was better at drawing or fading on will. Now that I don't get to play as often, well I am happy for anything in the fairway.

Now back on topic. IMO I like something with a thinner sole and minimal offset. (Not blade mind you...just more minimal.) Our fairways do get water, but in the heat of the summer they are still very compact, as our ground has a lot of sand. So the thin soul tends not to bounce as much. (IMO) So I tend to like the Ping "S" series and most of the Mizuno's, of course outside of my ISI ;)

I use X-18 and love them however, i'm only a begginer so my advise should be taken as such. The clubs are pretty forgiving and at $500 that's a pretty big bang for your buck.

I interpreted the saying "aim and shoot" a little differently. My point is I thought you meant you don't spend much time playing often and you just kind of go out there and just try to hit it and hope for the best, kind of like a hacker, for lack of a better word, lol.

i have to agree with most of the comments here. if you shooting 7, you should be looking at forgiving player's irons. not oversized clubs.

but if you at 7-index with graphite slazenger's > the world is your oyster.
