So since I read about the point system the staff here at

The Sand Trap used for the 2006 Newport Cup , I've been playing it against my wife. I'm a 0.3 handicap and she is a 23.3. Let me tell you...she kicks my ass every damn time!!! Now I'm not complaining...I think it's a lot of fun. I haven't played to my handicap yet when playing against her, and she has been playing under her's. It's still a ton of fun trying though...and this past weekend I thought I had her after the front nine (see below).

Looks like more than anything, she had a great back 9. If I'm reading that right she shot a 51 on the front and a 40 on the back. That's a great 9-holes for a 23 handicapper.

Good for her! (too bad for you that she did that when you were playing against each other, though. Hopefully there was no money on it. )

Yep...you are reading that right. And she should have had 6 pars in a row!!

Definately the best she has played over a stretch of 9 holes. She blames the front nine score on not being able to hit range balls first. I blame it on her lack of putting ability on the front!

It was linked in the first post. Here is the description.

In addition to the match play component, we had an individual competition going as well. Each player was given the same number of points as their handicap, then their gross scores added to or subtracted from the totals to the tune of -1 for double bogey, +1 for par, +3 for birdie, and +5 for eagle.

Cool of you to post your little intra-marital golf competition...tho it seems there's a combination of sandbagging and vanity perhaps?

Hopefully there is a consolation prize waiting at home later on?

My wife and I are very good about sparking competition between the two of us. Its some of the most friendly rivalry I've ever been a part of. I guess that is what helps to make a great marriage.

remember: Substitute the word "patience" anytime you use the word "marriage" and you are setting yourself up for a good one. (ie: my wife and I have been "patient" for a little over 5 years now, and I we are working hard to ensure that we can match the "patience" of our grandparents who were "patient" for over 60 years).

Hardly. She played the round of her life (almost...minus the front nine...) and I played like crap on the back. Not sure how the handicaps don't match up...perhaps you would care to enlighten?

Good advise to live by. Marriage definitely takes patience

Actually, my wife and I are also pretty competitive. From her tennis days and me being active in sports all of my life, we both have the desire to compete...and to play well. She really got into golf last year and has already posted 14 or so rounds this year. I'm loving it!
Looks like a fun game, I am playing with my wife on 7/7, maybe we will try it out.

I don't think it has an official name, but Erik posted that it was a, "modified Southern Point format" (

here ). Prepare to get your butt kicked!

I'm starting to believe that this game is stacked just for her. It almost isn't fair!! She start off with 23 freaking points and I start with 1 (now that my index went up... ). How is that fair?!?!

Most of those kinds of games are rigged for the higher handicappers. Their scores vary too much to really have a super-fair match.

Just a bookkeeping note... here are the two games that have been mentioned: Modified Southern Point A favorite among the old fogies I play with, it goes like this, all based on your NET (after you get your strokes on whatever holes): 1 point for a net bogey 2 points for a net par 3 points for a net birdie 4 points for an net eagle 5 points (never happens) for a net double eagle In other words, if you shoot your handicap, you should finish with about 36 points: 2 per hole for 18 holes. MSP can be a fast game to play because once you go beyond net bogey, you get no points and can pick up. Handi-Points The other game mentioned was one that Dave Koster told me about, and it still doesn't really have a name. I've called it simply "Handi-Points" here for the heck of it. As mentioned, you start with the number of your handicap (your course handicap). This game is played with GROSS scores (no handicap adjustments). If you make double bogey or worse, you take a point away. If you make par, you add a point. If you make birdie, +3, and +5 for an eagle. I guess if you make a double eagle (again, gross scores, not net) you get +7 or +9 - or maybe you just get declared the winner for making a freakin' double eagle. Anyway... yeah. It's almost like a Modified Southern Point because if you shoot your handicap, you should end up just above 18. Say there's a 3 handicap, and he bogeys three holes. No change in points. He pars the other 15, and gets +15, so he finishes at +18. If he birdies one more hole (+3) but one of his bogeys turns into a double (-1), he still will have shot his handicap but will finish with 20 points. Because the game only punishes you one point for double bogeys or worse, the guy who makes a lot of doubles but also makes a lot of birdies will beat the consistent par/bogey guy most of the time. So, this game's a bit more fair, I think, than Modified Southern Point.

Those being the 30+ range...or higher??!?

Thanks again for posting (and to Mr. Koster...Mr. Numbers himself!) the "Handi-Points" game. It really is a lot of fun

Not many 30s, but plenty of 26s or so. Uhmmm, yeah. Is it any wonder 78 Southern Points (in two-man teams) often isn't enough to win?

Southern Points looks very similar to Stableford points which are very popular in Ireland, I guess using the same logic as sits behind the ESC.

My wife has shot in the mid 90s a couple of times recently (her index is around 29) which is making me nervous as it's conceivable that if she has a great day and I have a stinker she'll beat me!! I wont concede of course unless we're playing off the same tees!!

On the plus side we do clean-up in the Couples tournaments at our club.

Now there's a bag of worms. How in the world do I get the wife to play in a tournament? She likes competition, but she doesn't believe she is good enough to play in a tournament...be it a couples tournament or just individual. Should I ween her in by entering the "glow ball" scramble tournament next month?!?!

Scramble is a great way to start as there's virtually no pressure. If she enjoys it then couples best ball is the next step.

    • A list with both Airborne and Goonies.......   I think a list of 5 is very difficult Shawshank is definitely on the list Boogie Nights (This is a great film, but Really tough to omit PT Andersons other work . so I would need to include Magnolia and There Will Be Blood. And if we are being honest Daniel Day Lewis had a hell of a performance in There Will Be Blood. Actually if you watch There Will Be Blood and then Phantom Thread, you get to see DDL perform at 2 very different characters at opposite ends of the spectrum) No Country for Old Men Godfather (GodFather 2 may be the better film) Good Fellas (I might argue that Casino deserves as much love as Good Fellas, it is simply a great gangster film) Usual Suspects Saving Private Ryan (but Spielberg has made so many great movies) L.A. Confidential Almost Famous (This is one of my personal Favorite films, ever!) Modern Times (an almost perfect silent film made as the talkies were taking over)
