I'm in the market for some new irons. I just started playing again in May after a 6 year layoff. Back then I was around a 15 handicap and was continuing to get lower scores, but I got injured from basketball which prevented me to do any sports. I didn't play golf for about 6 months and then when I came back, I had a really bad yip in my swing and I literally could not hit the ball.

That is the reason I gave up for awhile. Well, I decided to give it another shot after 6 years and it's been 2 months so far. I can't play with my muscle backs anymore due to inconsistency. I've played about 10 times these past 2 months and I've averaged in the mid 90's.....couple of rounds into the 100's.

I decided it's time to get some new irons and get properly fitted for them. I have my eyes on the Ping G10's and I10's. I know the G10's are more forgiving, but the look at address bothers me. The I10's look much better at address to me due to a thinner top line.

My question is,.....which set should I go for?

My next set of irons, I plan on keeping them for a long time. I'm thinking that with time, my game will improve and the I10's will be perfect for me. I'm trying to compromise between an extremely forgiving iron and a great visual setup of a blade. I guess I'm trying to plan for the future a bit.

Anyone here hit any of these irons? I am aware that the I10's are forgiving also, so I'm wondering if they are fairly easy to hit. A lot easier than muscle backs, I'm sure.

I appreciate any opinions and feedback.

I would highly recommend that you hit the i10s before making a decision.

As far as I am concerned, the i10s are a player's club. They are much less forgiving than the G10s. There is a big gap between the the G10 and i10. In fact, the i10s are significantly less forgiving than the i5s. I would put them near the s58 irons in terms of forgiveness and workability.

They are great clubs, but IMHO, not for the high or mid-capper. I have seen a lot of i10s on the second hand market because many people did not hit them first and assumed they were just the successor to the i5.

EDIT: If you want a forgiving club with a player's appearance at address, take a look at the Callaway FTs. Thin topline and very forgiving.

Or, if you are set on PING, you could always order the i5s. That's one of the great things about PING - just because it's not their current line doesn't mean you can't order it. But still, I wouldn't catagorize the i5s as "extremely" forgiving.

One last thing, PING has recently updated their color coding system. So if you are used to the older color dots, take a look at the new chart.

I was in the same situation a little while ago, i really wanted ping irons but couldnt decide between the i or G10. The i's were a little to much club for me and the 10's just way to big, i demoed the CG Gold and fell in love with them they fall right between the G and i 10, if you can get over the ugly gell insert they are a great club, also the taylor made R7 may suit you.

i would try to get fitted before you did anything.

thanks for the replies. I will definitely try out both clubs and get fitted for which ever works for me. My concern was having such a forgiving set of irons like g10 three years from now and my swing improves to where it needs a set of i10. I was trying to buy things once and I'm trying to figure out which would be best for me in the long run. I plan on keeping these irons for a long time.

I wouldn't worry about 3 years from now. Even assuming that you can keep yourself from buying something new and shiny even if you don't need it, PING irons hold their value better than just about anything else on the market. You can always sell them if you decide you are ready for a player's club.

IMO if you already don't like the G10's appearance at address right now, you will be unhappy with them if you buy them. Unless you hit them a whole lot better then the I10's go with what you like and what looks good to you. Not likeing the clubs look or feel isn't going to lead to many good shots imo.

I have the i10's and love them. I went through the whole fitting process and trying numerous irons.

For me it came down to looks and price, I received a great price on them so I could not turn them down.

I am a mid to high handi and I dont find it hard to hit compared to others. I came from Adam golf clubs and have played numerous rounds with the G5s.

Youll be happy with what ever decision you make.

Seriously, you shouldnt listen to these people saying the i10s are extremely hard to hit and they do not come close to the S58s. I was between the S58s and the i10s, and the i10s provide you with the forgiveness of a cavity back with the workability of a muscle back. After getting my i10s, ive picked up 15-20 yards in my irons and they are extrememly forgiving, every time i take a shot im confident the club is going to perform well. My problem with the S58 irons was the ball flight, it was extrememly low and the irons stung terribly when i hit it off the inside. A buddy of mine, (he is 22 handicap) got the g10s and there fine for him, but if you are going to improve, you could handle the i10s. I love my i10s and they are my favorite club in my bag, and i think they should be in your bag too.

The i10's are extremely forgiving considering the size of the club and the amount of offset they have.

They are a perfect club for a 20 and under handicapper who is dedicated to the game and wants to improve and stay with the same clubs for a while.

Coming from muscle backs, the i10s will seems like big berthas.

I just switched to them from wilson pi5s, which are also pretty forgiving for a players club, and the i10 are MUCH more forgiving and comforting at address.

Also, like you, I was a 10-15 handicapper that took 5 years off.

I've had a similar experience with my i10's. Got them in September and just love them. They'll be in my bag for a while. I hit mine farther than my G2's, but not as much as 15-20 yards. My G2's were too offset for me and had me fighting the lefts too much, and they went quite high; my home course is near the ocean, so with the wind it wasn't a good fit.

As suggested, try out the different models and go with what works best for you.

i10's no doubt.

I10´no doubt. G10´s are a bit too much forgiveness... I added a G10 iron to my 4-PW i10 set, and it´s so bulky I can´t hit it.
Too much offset, they seems to left forever....

I did hit the G10's, I did not like the look at them at address, seemed to be to bulky of a club, I like the blade look that the i10's give.

Overall I think my mind was set on the i10's from the begining, a second choice was the mizuno MX-25 (I believe).

Ping is a great set of clubs, you will have them for some time to come. Just make sure you get properly fitted, I wish I did, I had to reshaft some of my irons, to heavy of a shaft for me.

thanks everyone for their replies!

i will schedule a fitting session with, who my friends tell me, is the best in the state. that fitting session will tell me which ones are best for me. I'm hoping the i10's will be right for me because they just look better at address first of all.

i started playing golf with a set of i3 o-size about 9 years ago, so i'm kinda used to the "bulkiness" of pings, but the g10's were a little too bulky. we shall see though. they could be everything and more when i actually hit them.
