I have been trying for about a week and a half. My good shots are really good but I hit to many ugly ones. Should I keep the faith and continue or revert back to the old swing?

I never had heard about the stack and tilt swing untill today. I did a little research and then found out for the past few weeks that is the swing that my pro has been giving me. Its been working great for me and im working it in nicely and lowering my scores.

Just wondering: What clubs are producing these ugly shots? Just based on the stack and tilt swing, your bad shots are probably more in the longer clubs than the shorter ones.

My personal advice would be to get away from stack and tilt. As efficient as it is when it comes to short and mid irons, it produces extremly inconsistent results in the woods for anybody in the mid handicap range or higher.
People like Mike Weir and Aaron Baddeley can pull it off because tey are extremely coordinated and have all day to work on it. Im not trying to suggest that you are uncoordinted or clumsy or anything like that, but it takes one hell of a golfer to great the best results from that type of swing IMO.

I'm sick of gimmick swings and moves. I quit buying golf magazines because of it. If it works for you so be it. I think a lot of it is snake oil. The scorecard doesn't show how you swung, just how many swings you took.

I just started golfing a little over a year ago. For my first few months, I was really frustrated with lack of distance and spin, so when I first read about s&t; I tried it immediately.

That was about this time last year, and it worked wonders for my game. I finally learned how to come at the ball steeply and hit the ball first, divot after the ball. I gained nearly 20 yards on my irons from the solid contact and increased clubhead speed!

Like others have said, my problems were with the driver and long irons. The newly found steepness of my downswing translated to those clubs as well, which is not always desired. I also had a really hard time working the ball left to right when I needed to.

I have moved back to a more traditional weight transfer to flatten out my swing a bit, but I use my old S&T move sometimes on the range when I have lost that feel for the crisp shot. Usually after a couple crisp S&T shots, I can go back to my standard swing with a better picture of what I am trying to create.

That was my experience as well so I gave it up. Maybe if you keep at it you will prosper with it, who knows? It certainly has potential but it might be too fine of an edge for most people.

I don't stack and tilt. But it wasn't until I tried to do the stack and tilt that I had that major breakthrough with my irons. Went from being an incosistant sweeper to taking a fair divot.

i was at the driving range hitting balls and this guy says he was using the stack and tilt. I tried it and it didn't feel right. Now it screwed my swing so bad i had to take a lesson to fix it. Stay away from this gimmick because if you want to swing correctly it will just make you more frustrated.

It works for me. I started about 8 years ago and through trail and error, built this swing from what worked for me. Shot under 80 and won my company's golf league and season ending championship. But lost my swing a few months later and then when the swing and tilt appeared in the golf magazine, a light bulb went off, went out that afternoon and shot 80, bogeyed both 9 and 18, both with 3 putts. I do have a completly different swing with my driver, more slow and wide like a LPGA golfer, and as you can see, I carry no fairway woods (or rarely do). For me, this is the most accurate, reliable and repeatable swing I've come across. I certainly would give it a season and see what you think.... jmoc

I have used gimmicks like a compact swing or an inside path, but it never seemed to be repeatable.

The only thing that consistently works for me is the classic full swing with weight shift, reverse K, etc. But these moves are very unintuitive and time consuming to engrain. In our society everybody is looking for the quick fix but it doesn't work that way in golf.

I saw Aaron Baddely at The Open using his stack and tilt technique- it looked ugly and cumbersome and relies a great deal on hand eye co ordination and copious amounts of practice which frankly most amateurs don't have time to put in to practice.

My advice is to avoid it and stick to traditional methods- Tiger, Phil, Greg do well using broadly traditional methods of swinging the club.

I tried it for a session last fall and had some success on the range -- nice, crisp contact with the irons. But, as others have pointed out, the mis-hits multiply as the clubs get longer.

I have tried S & T a few times on the range this year and have had almost no luck with it. I got into a bit of a rhythm during one session, but even then I was hitting the ball 10-15 yards shorter with that method.

I've given up on it.

I started using characteristics of the Stack and Tilt a while back. The main improvement I saw was better ball striking. Keeping my weight mostly on my front side helped with my consistency.

I'm pretty sure and inside path to the ball isnt a gimmick swing... its the fundamental part of all swings.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
