My last several sessions at the range have involved me working on nothing but drawing and cutting the ball. I have no problem drawing the ball or controlling the amount of draw I put on the ball, but for the life of me I cannot make that little white piece of crap turn to the right.

Every time I try it's the same thing: A weak, high push about half the distance it should be going. It's horrifyingly frustrating. I do get the rare one that actually cuts a little bit, but this is something I need to start being able to do consistently. I can work it to the right with my driver and 3-wood, but that's easy, and more often than not, accidental. I need to be able to do it with my irons.

Please help me cut the ball.

The fade:

1) open the club face
2) place a club on the ground down the target line
3) take your swing outside the target line or club on the ground
4) keep you club face open by not turning over your wrist or in other words the back of your hand will face the target at address and at impact and the follow through.
5) you can cut the ball more by opening the club face more and taking the club more outside.

fading away for now.

Try moving the ball a little forward and opening your stance. The important part (at least for me) is to remember to swing around the body. I had a tendency to not do that when trying to fade and it only produced over the tops/pulls to the left.

I open the face a hair and really try to set my wrists more upright than I would for a straight shot or a draw. That helps me swing a little more out to in which helps start the ball on the right line before if fades. I get the same high push/block that you're complaining of if I just open the face of my club since I swing from the inside.

Open you stance (aim left of your target) aim the clubface at your target. Now take your club back outside the line now on the downswing dont try and close your club face.Your clubface should meet the ball the same at address hitting accross the ball from outside to innot letting your rists turn over. This should help you cut the ball. Just remember you will loose some distance.

I had the same problem in reverse, ie I could not hit a draw.

It's because my normal shots were fades.

Now that I have my mechanics corrected so that I hit my normal shots straight, I am starting to be able to shape shots into draws or fades at will. I straightened out my shots by performing a clinical backswing and using my hips instead of hands to start the downswing.

YMMV

you may also want to consider chaning your grip, little strong for draws, little weak for a cut.

try opening the clubface, choke up on the club a bit, play the ball up in your stance and try and hit the ball from the outside of your swing plane.

Feel as if you are coming over the top of the ball, from right to left. When I want to hit a fade I also stand closer to the ball and really come over the top.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
