Wrist cock is not a fundamental, but it will occur no matter what, if you want the club to get at parallel. Because the angle of your wrist do change as you swing to the top. Now do you mentally think about it, some have to, some don't. Some cock way late, some cock the wrist early. Its a personal preference. For me, i don't even try to think of my hands, they just go along for the ride. For me, the weight of the clubhead demands for the wrist to cock, because it passes a certain point were it will fall towards the ground again, and i don't try to inhibit that motion.

To that actual topic, I don't find the wrist cock to be a natural movement at all. You can't simply "set up properly" and expect the wrists to work properly "automatically." It doesn't happen.

My personal opinion,

With a good on-plane backswing, wrist cock occurs naturally. You only cock wrists intentionally on certain specialty shots.

The wrists can bend in any of three directions at the top of the swing. Call it "cocking", "hinging" or "bending" if you wish - to me, it's all the same basic idea. If you think a flat left wrist is the only position to be in at the top of the swing, take a look at Ben Hogan. Then take a look at Dustin Johnson. Total opposites, and neither uses a flat left wrist at the top of the swing. Any one of the three cocking/hinging positions can work. Find out what's best for you.
