a fun read on one of the pga.com pages... :

"...
There was nothing extraordinary about his (Tiger Woods) five-shot victory, a calculated performance at the Old Course that kept a small cast of challengers from catching him. Even so, Woods knew right away that Sunday at St. Andrews would be special, starting with a series of shots not many people saw.
That's because they were on the practice range.
"I hit the 100-yard sign four straight times," Woods said in an interview last week. "That was the start of my warm-up. I hit a couple of little wedges to loosen up, then hit to the sign. Peppered it four straight times in the air, on the right zero -- not the middle zero, the right zero."
Swing coach Hank Haney was standing behind him, quietly impressed, and offered some advice to the caddie.
"He hit that sign four times in a row -- and five out of eight," Steve Williams said. "Hank says to me, `The first time he gets inside 100 yards, you might want to tell him to aim away from the flag.' "
Williams laughed, just as he did that day. Turns out it wasn't a joke.
"First time I'm inside 100 yards is on No. 6," Woods said. "I had 98 yards to the hole. What happens? I one-hop it off the flag and it spins off the shelf."
Woods had to scramble for par, and on the way to the next tee, Williams told him what Haney said on the range.
"I said, 'You idiot, why didn't you just tell me to aim away from the flag?' It's not that hard," Woods said.
The next time he had under 100 yards was on No. 7. Woods nearly holed out.
"I had to aim away from the flag there," he said with a smile, "because of that shelf."..."

That is classic. I nearly sent the water I was drinking up through my nose.

Thank you.

  • 3 weeks later...
Way back in '93 (I think) I was at a marketing retreat in southern California. The guy seated next to me at dinner showed up late because he had been at his son's golf tournament. It was the state Championships.

He introduced himself by saying, "I've just seen the future of golf!" ...and then recanted what he had witnessed sitting by the 18th green (a par 4).

A skinny black kid named Tiger was playing in the final group and needed par to win and bogey to force a playoff.

He missed the green on the shortside and had a down hill lie in long grass. Because this was the last group most of the teams, coaches and families were gathered around the green.

Woods surveyed his shot and studied the three paces of green sloping away between him and the flag. He took a couple of very full practice swings which made people wonder what he was thinking.

He then opened the blade on a sand wedge to attempt a a flop shot. His attempt was a nightmare. He slid the club completely under the ball, missed the shot and caused the ball to settle even further in the tall rough.

Woods looked at the ball, then at his mother in disbelief then turned away from the crowd to compose himself. Lying three, he now needed up and down to force a playoff.

My new acquaintence was showing his admiration for the youngster and said, "This kid must have ice water in his veins ... because what he did you won't see from anyone on tour."

Tiger walked around the area studying the grass for a spot similar to where his ball was resting. He took a couple of long full practice swings, then returned to his ball played a flop shot that landed softly and trickled into the cup to win the championship! Again, his eyes found his mother and they smiled at each other - ICE WATER, INDEED!

Bury me with a golf glove in my pocket - just in case!

I just wonder if what he's inferring is illegal in Sweden. Or maybe it's all done in international waters?

    • Was Talking with a buddy last night and got to thinking how many different courses we have played and was a little underwhelmed at my count. I assumed I was around 100 give or take. After about an hour of racking my brain I realized Im right at or just above 60. There could be a few that I cant recall or don't have record of but overall felt like that was a decent number. 55 in Florida, 2 in Arizona, 1 in New Hampshire, 1 in Michigan, and 1 in Indiana.  Now a new goal of getting to that 100 courses. Plan is to get to 75 by end of year and have dates of courses already set to get me to 70 so 75 shouldn't be out of question.  Below is the list of courses:  State Courses AZ Phoenician AZ The Legacy FL Abbey Course at St. Leo FL Babe Zaharias FL Bardmoor FL Bent Tree FL Big Cypress Exec FL Big Cypress South FL Bloomingdale FL Bobcat Trail FL Champions Gate FL Chi Chi Rodriguez FL Clearwater Country Club FL Club Renaissance  FL Copperhead FL Countryway FL Cove Cay FL Cypress Creek FL Diamond Hill FL Falcons Fire FL Fox Hollow FL Freedom Fairways FL Greenfield Plantation FL Hawks Landing FL Heritage Harbour Bradenton FL Heritage Harbour Land o Lakes FL Heritage Isles FL Highlands Reserve FL lake Jovita North FL Lake Jovita South FL Lexington Oaks FL Links at Greenfield Plantation FL Links of Lake Bernadette FL Links of Sandpiper Lakeland FL Northdale FL Plantation Palms FL River Hills FL Rocky Point FL Rogers FL Saddlebrook- Plamer FL Saddlebrook- Saddlebrook FL Sandpiper Lakeland FL Sandpiper Suncity FL Scepter Golf Club Falcon FL Shalamar FL Seminole Lake Country Club FL Silver Dollar FL Silverado FL Streamsong Red FL Sugarmill Woods Cypress FL Sugarmill Woods Pine FL Summerfield FL Temple Terrace FL Waterlefe FL Wentworth FL Westchase FL World Woods Pine Barrons IN Rock Hollow MI Ravines NH Brookside
