I play regularly at a Semi-private course in Tampa.......They normally have a $142.50/mo for a single golf membership and you have to pay $16 for Cart. Right now they have a temporary deal for 1/2.....71.25/ mo for 3 months.

I normally play on Sat morning for $30 (part of a men group special rate) then on Sunday for $26 (part of a couple game special rate)....so I would only be saving $25/month during the 3 month trial....after that, my cost would be $46.50 more per month.

As I don't get to play 2/week every week....I can't see any real benefit from joining....and it's 8 miles from my house.

In the Phoenix, AZ area there are many private clubs with entry fees of $20,00 up to what ever you can afford, depending upon the club. There are also many options with discount cards that you can purchase. I use the South West PGA card. It costs $125 a year and offers 50% off the rack rate at about 50 or so local courses. I also purchase a Phoenix city card ($35) and it offers discounts at all the city courses (there are 5). But there are other cards available that have different costs, courses that honor the card, and discounts. If you can stand the heat in summer and "snow birds" in winter it is a golfer's paradise.

Just curious because I found out I could get a student rate for $350 which includes unlimited golf during the week and any time after 12PM on the weekends. And if I sign up now ill get a free winter pass from now until April and the membership last till April 2012. Seems almost too good to be true!

Anyone else in college get a real good deal like this?

Its a 68.3/118 par 70 course and it is pretty open. The layout is nothing spectacular but I like it and it is great to practice on espcially for a new player like me. The greens and fairways are all in real nice condition, better then some more expensive courses I have played at in the area.

Its 10 minutes from my house too so I will get to play a lot! I am pretty excited.

There's an old country club less than a mile form my house. $40K to get in the door plus $800 a month for food, drink, lockers, etc whether you use it or not. Eat/drink more and you pay more. The course is magnificent looking and plays great by all reports. The men's clubhouse is something else. Everything you could want. But for that kind of money I'd have to be there 24/7. They charge that kind of dough to keep me and the rest of the riff-raff out.

Wait wait wait... 40k initiation is middle of the road?

I paid $6000 initiation. Dues are around $4000 per year and include locker, range balls, and club storage. Carts are $15 per round or something like $750 per year. This is for a individual, and this is only a golf club, no pool, but a nice clubhouse.

So you give these guys $6000 to join and another $4000 per year, and they wont even throw in a cart? christ!

I'd disagree for Southern California - from all I've looked at it is towards the inexpensive end. I've seen a small handful of private clubs that are a little less, but most of them in this area are greater than $100k initiation and $1200-1500/month dues. If there was a decent club here for $40k I'd be there.....

There is some sick money in CA. That is a decent house here.

Oh, don't get us started on our housing prices!

Back on club prices, in the early 90's I was invited to join a nice club north of Los Angeles (I was doing a lot of work with a Japanese company that had recently purchased the club as a "fun" business). At that time, the initiation was $250k (although they'd cut me a deal) and dues were $900 month (remember, this is early '90s!). But the funniest thing reading the membership package was that they charged an extra $2.50/month for shoe storage. I declined and told them I couldn't afford the shoe fees......

Not sure I understand joining a country club. I like to play different courses, but if I'm paying a boat load od cash to join one club, I'd feel like I'd have to always play there to get my money's worth.
my get up and go musta got up and went..

I like playing other course to but I joined a local 9 hole muni for $425 year which includes cart storage and rolling fee so I have extra to go to other courses but play a lot during the week at my course. I could join the semi-private 18hole course here in town for $80 a month but I would feel I would need to play there more for double the cost not including storage and rolling fee. it is a much nicer course and a full 18 but just haven't made myself spend the extra $$$
