I'm looking for a Sand Wedge but nothing to fancy something that will just get it done. I'm looking at this Nike Ignite Reg:70$ for 50$ LINK

Are there any other sand wedges you recommend preferably from Golftown.ca

I have this exact club in my bag. Great club, lazer sharp from most distances.

You'll want to have a lob wedge for use in sand, though. This is more of an attack wedge for hitting balls 90-100 yards (depending on your distance, think of it as about a PW -10 or 15 yards).

Are you looking for something in the $50-70 price range? If so, check out the Srixon WG504. TGW had these for $59 a few months ago.

Cleveland 588 RTG. Perhaps the best wedge ever made. You can buy these things brand new for $70.00. Or if you dont like the look of the "rusty" wedge you can buy the original 588 chrome wedge for $80.00.

I purchased a pair of Ping iWedges [54*(SW) and 58*(LW)] about a month ago, and have been very happy. $95/each at Golfsmith. I notice that, like me, you're a high-handicapper. I demoed the Cleveland CG14s and Vokey SpinMilled, and I honestly had trouble hitting them as consistently. You won't find any pros playing the iWedges, but they're helpful for those of us who can't practice every day (or even every week).

Also, the bounce/loft combinations for the Vokey's were overwhelming. The iWedges are pretty simple: you get one bounce choice for each loft. I imagine that some players will "graduate" to more of player's wedge as they improve, so you might be able to find some gently used ones on the cheap.

Hit some for yourself, and find what works for you. Good luck in search.

For what it's worth, I took a "short game" lesson recently, and it helped my sand play 100 times more than buying a new wedge did.

What are you looking for, a wedge to use in sand specifically, or some type of utility club around the green?

I'm not sure that is great advice for the OP who lists his handicap as a 36.

A sand wedge should have some bounce to it, 12-16 deg and typically 56 deg loft. Lob wedges typically have low bounce and higher loft (60 deg). I wouldn't recommend a lob wedge for the OP. I couldn't find any specs for the Ignite wedge. There are two other Nike wedges on sale for $80 - SV Tour and SV Tour black satin available in 56/14.

Fair enough, I play a 60 degree wedge with 10 degrees bounce out of the sand, usually.

56/14 seems good, too. I was just saying I don't like the Ignite SW out of the sand, it's really being called an "Attack Wedge" lately by nike, for that reason. Apparently, this SW is 54 degrees.

You have the following listed in your bag:

Soon to be Taylormade Burner Draw 3,4,5 Hybrid 6,7,8,9 Irons PW I'm presuiming you have a putter also, so that means you're only playing 10 clubs in your bag? You might as well add that Nike SW and a nice Cleveland 60 degree, and you'll still have room for 2 more clubs in your bag!

I noticed that you were looking for a 14th club. Have you considered a gap wedge? I think you will get far more use out of it than a 5 or 7 wood. I assume you don't carry a 3 wood because you prefer your 2 hybrid. I'd suggest getting one to match your set so that it is something that is forgiving enough for you to hit out of the fairway.

I tried to start a new thread on it but I'm too much of a n00b to have that ability yet. (If a mod could allow the thread I created a couple of days ago in this subforum, I'd be thrilled).

I hit this Sand Wedge with the Ignite set between 95-105. My 60 degree goes about 75-80, but it's very hard to hit out of the fairway. I had a 52 and 56 degree wedge in my bag, but this SW took those out of the equation. So anything higher than this SW I can't reliably hit out of a tight lie, and out of the rough, I'm quite well covered between my SW and my 60 degree.

Given this above, I guess you are looking to add to your woods or long irons. And IMO this decision hinges on how you hit your driver and 2 hybrid.

You could simply add a 3 wood or strong 3 to hit off the tee for accuracy and occassionally from the fairway. However, the 2 might be the go to club for you off the tee. The other option would be to ditch the 2 hybrid and go with a 3 wood and 5 wood, that's assuming you don't like the 2. You could do this and replace your 3 iron with a 3 hyrbid, if you wanted to keep a hybrid in the bag. But that gets pricey. I would get something whether it be a 3 wood, gap wedge, whatever because it's just another weapon in the bag. But don't be lured into something gimicky like a chipper.

Well, here's what I basically wrote in my original thread which never appeared.

My clubs in my bag, currently, are as follows, yardage-wise: Driver: 240 Average 2I(H): 210 Average off tee, 195-200 Average off Fairway 3I(H): 190 4I: 180 5I: 170 6I: 160 7I: 148 8I: 138 9I: 127 PW: 115 SW: 100 60 Degree: 80 So the problem is that it's hard to see where a 3W helps me in terms of off the tee, since my 2I is plenty long, and I probably could never hit the 3W (I play Sumo2) off the deck anyway. Plus, I can't hit the 60Deg reliably off the fairway (rough/sand is no problem) enough to go with it, and I can do reasonably well enough with the SW. So I was thinking some groups of clubs are a possiblity:
  • 3W/4W type club
  • Some Wedge
  • Some "Gimmicky club", like the following:
  • Alien Sand Wedge
  • 73 Degree Lob Wedge
  • A lefthanded club?!
