In another thread, someone mentioned that they thought it was wrong to ask a fellow player what club they had just hit with. My friends and I do this all the time. And, if I'm paired up with someone I don't know, if they seem to have similar club distances I'll even ask them. And, I've been asked many times myself.

I've never even thought it could be considered verbotten to ask someone what they hit with.

What are some other unwritten rules you play by?

Ya know, I always thought it was taboo too to ask someone what club they hit AFTER they hit the ball ... I don't have an issue asking what they use BEFORE they use it (seems weird I know) ... Unwritten rule - Looser buys the drinks!

That's not an unwritten rule, it's a written rule. Rule 8.1. - Advice.

Oh Man! Another rule I am going to have to rail against!

Is asking someone what club they hit really advice though? Regardless, let's hear some more! Is buying beer for a hole in one in the book? That's an excellent unwritten rule!

But this rule only applies if i´m going to play a ball from a similar distance, correct? If my ball is like 100m upfront and i ask someone what he just hit from 150m in - it isnt advice, right?

We had just one yesterday in a tourney - and yes in Germany, its an unwritten rule to buy drinks (champagne) for the whole tournament afterwards. So actually a hole in one can become quite costly... I read in Japan, people shooting a hole in one are supposed to sent out money to friends for the good luck - thats even more costlier, the article mentioned it might be up to 10k - thats why people have hole in one insurance over there. On our shortest Par3 there is a unwritten club rule - whoever shoots birdie gets 3 € from every flight partner.

we have a hole in one club. you pay ten dollars to join. if somebody gets a hole in one (with at least two witnesses) they get all of the money, plus the pro shop matches it in shop credit. if you win it is an unwritten rule to buy drinks for everybody in the clubhouse

phil kessel (the hockey player) won and didn't buy drinks. he was actually going around and demanding his money. and he's a millionaire.

I really don't attach as much to walking on someone's line as others do. You can back it in that half the field has already walked across that exact line not so long ago so it shouldn't make a huge difference. I also think there should be some logic applied to the advice rule. I hit a fairly long ball and I often play with older guys who ask with interest what someone like me hits into a green from there. Certainly not because they are hoping to line up with the same club but merely to shake their heads and mutter 'Oh to be young again'...

I never leave the tee box until everyone is done hitting, and same goes for putting on the green. Dont know if other people do this, but it seems like good manors.

There are actually quite a few courses in Australia which encourage you to move on as soon as you have putted out to increase the pace of play. I agree that it is polite to wait around, but I do think staying out of the way of the people behind is at least as important most of the time. This is also dependant on the departing people being quiet on leaving the green.

This is my biggest pet peeve and it happens all the time when pace of play is slow.

I will be on the tee box waiting to tee off and the group behind me pulls their cart up with the rest of us.

Is it just me or is the one of the rudest things out there.

The cart drives me nuts too, but I had a guy pull up to the tee box the other day and start washing his ball while we were teeing off. The ball washer was about 5 feet behind us.

I gotta admit I did this a couple of weeks ago. HOWEVER, the group ahead of us had at least an entirely open hole the entire back nine, we caught up to them on 11 and waited between the green and the tee for the next 5 holes, never being asked to play through. So on 17 I just drove up behind them, got out and went and putted on 16. They teed off and they were just putting in the flag n 18 as we were getting ready to tee off on 18. It sped them up, that's for sure. I don't condone it, but I was tired of waiting so I had to do something to make me feel better. I'm not proud of it, but oh well.
