As a new golfer, I am always catching myself looking at the clubs of other golfers . . . often wondering why they picked this driver and those irons and why that ugly-ass putter.

At the bottom of posts, I see a lot of forum member's "weapons of choice", but why?

My buddies have accused me of over-analyzing new interests, but I am curious as to why golfers pick this brand over that, this style over that, etc.

If this topic has been done to death, forgive me . . . but curiousity is killing me.

Thanks,

Steve

well as for my driver, i have always wanted to try a weight system type one. that and i like the more classic "rounded" shape drivers over the square ones. and of course i liked the way i hit it when i tried it.

as for my irons, i got them about a year ago when i was a decent golfer (+15ish) and they were marked for game improvement. i liked them then, and i still like them now, they are great clubs.

my big bertha was a kind of lucky guess. it was between that and the g10, and i couldn't find the difference between the two asides the composite on big bertha. so i just went with the big bertha because it was cheaper, and seemed logical. the touredge wood was a gift, i generally don't even have it in my bag.

my wedge was a gift as well, i always wanted the club and finally got it.

my gyro putter i tried out at a local store for about 30 minutes. that and a few other ones. i really got attuned to it, and have stuck with it. (well kind of, there is another putter i use occasionally )

My G5 because it was the 1st Driver I tried and could hit well, simple as that. Still works fine. - 260-300yds consistently.
WarBird 5 Wood - because it was picked up cheaply 'to try a 5 wood', and quite simply goes a mile for me, consistently. Steel shafted and uber-reliable. Might be tempted with a 4wood, but wont part with the War Bird anyway.
AP2's - as I wanted a better set of 'players' clubs, and after an unsure start, i'm hitting them very well now.
Vokeys: Just got these too, and am so miffed that they havent been in my bag years before, they're awesome. Simple as.
2Ball Putter : Nice weight, nice feel, it works for me. except sometimes......

Decent golfer and +15 in the same sentence? I think you're ready to take on Tiger.

As for the OP's question - I like to see it as a mix of A) What works and feels best for my game atm and B) To be unique :)

When I buy my first set of decent clubs, they will be Ping. The reason why? They're made in America by skilled workers making good wages. Not coincidentally, they are top quality.

I got the driver b/c I wanted something that would help me keep the ball straighter and it hits very nicely for me.

The Slazenger stuff was a whole set I bought at the beginning of this year when I started playing. I plan to get some game improvement irons next year.

The Yes! putter I just bought yesterday and I just loved the way the ball comes of it. It was between that and a Scotty Circa '62 and the Yes! is half the price.

The Cleveland was a gift from my brother and it works great, I just need to get a gap wedge now.

What if a club is made in another country by skilled workers earning a good amount of money?

At a +15 not only are you ready to take on Tiger... you would destroy him... Your saying you have the potential to shoot a 57. Tom Watson's career best is a 58(not in a Tourney). And Tom has been around for a long time.

Somehow, I suspect your full of it....

That's one of the reasons I picked Ping: American made.

I would like to take a day or 12 and try various drivers, woods, irons, and putters, to see what really worked for me.

Keep the responses coming!

Thanks y'all,

Steve

Wait what? I'm pretty sure Tiger can shoot just a

little better than 15 over...

It depends where. I would be happy to buy quality European or Australian clubs if they existed.

But I won't buy from China if I can avoid it. It looks as if one day the only thing still made in the Anglosphere will be hamburgers.

Tiger plays to a +8 handicap. Therefore a +15 would smoke Tiger.

I believe it's a matter of semantics in that he meant to say he's a -15 handicap... not a +15.

Alright, I'm confused. You got me.

Well, I got my CG4 Tours because I was looking at them for a while, and, price and all, were the best clubs for me. The SQ I have, well, I love the sound of it. Sounds like a bomb dropped, and when you hit the ball with it, it flies. Too bad I'm not very consistent with it yet. Funny thing is, I got it brand new with a Pro Force v2 shaft at a golf show for $150, and didn't realize for months that it is a really good shaft.

A +15 means under par not over... note the (+). Tiger is (I'm guessing) likely around a +8 to a +10(at most) Someone here calulated Tiger + handicap once but I cannot remeber... other tour players are +4 to a +6.

Obviously he doesn't understand the concepts of a handicap. Of course he just means a standard 15 handicap.
