types of irons??

Ok, I am a very good golfer (scratch player), but I consider myself a very, very poor iron player. I want to see everyone's opinion on what type of irons are best suited for me! I will give a brief description of my game--distances, shot shape, etc. and then a description of all clubs I have used. I am a righty whose normal shot is a slight left to right flight---I can draw/hook a wood or hybrid, but CANNOT under any circumstance draw an iron of any kind. I am a fairly high ball hitter---which really gets into my head playing a shot into the wind. I am such a bad iron player I usually hit 3/4 or half shots into greens when I can! I consider myself to be very good from 100 and in, but after that the more I go down in clubs the worse I get!! Avg. distances pw-125, 9i-138, 8i-150, 7i-162, 6i-170, 5i-180(if I'm lucky!!!) after that it is pretty much hybrids. I am a very accurate driver of the ball and hit it fairly long---280-290 range. Not much of a divot taker, usually make good contact with pw-7i, but 6i and 5i are 50/50 at best and I do not get any distance out of them---usually a "puky" shot that falls very weakly to the right! I have used irons such as tm r7s, tm r7 tps, cobra im, callaway big bertha, mizuno blades, and cleveland hi-bores. Each of these has their pros and cons, but I just cannot seem to find a set that I feel comfortable with the distance I hit them, trajectory, and the direction. Where I play I am considered a longer than average player off the tee, but with my irons I am shorter than average!! Need some help---thanks!!

sounds to me like you need to take a run to your local golf shop, not so much a dick's sports or sporting goods shop, but a golf pro shop. they have the knowledge you need and they can properly fit you to a club. also, look into another set of blades, i find they are the best option if you are looking to shape shots and hit some great golf shots. best of luck!

You sound very unique.

I would go to a club fitter and a couple of golf stores and get the best fitter in the store to help you out.

You sound like you need to gain some confidence in your irons. have you just practice with your wedges until you develop a swing to make solid consistent contact. I tried this and it works for my game.

Sounds like you are a sweeper when you say you don't take much of a divot.

Sweeper being someone with too flat of a swing which makes them good with woods but poor with irons.

It also seems like you might have a lag problem considering you hit the ball too high so you might be flipping your left wrist (assuming you are a rightie) which also leads to not taking a divot.

What are you trying to fix? Game-Improvement style irons will mask some faults but not others. Are you trying to hide or fix your flaws?

Or are you worried about the high ball flight? You can get shafts that keep the ball low (relative to other shafts) with various kick points.

I hate to say it but it sounds like you need to fix your swing, not your irons. From the sounds of it you may have a flat swing that relies on a lot of hand action. See your local pro, then decide on your next set of sticks. All the speculation on the internet isn't going to help...

Very odd post from someome who claims to be a scratch golfer.
The idea of a scratch marker not being able to draw an iron is, to be frank, something I've never heard of. I've also never seen a scartch player who is a "bad" iron player. So.....you get around in par figures but have problems that a 25 marker might complain of. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

My definition of bad and other peoples' are probably much different. I am good wedges-7i, but after that (4-5-6) I am not what I consider good. I'm not going to argue with you on what type of player I am----let's just say I've enjoyed a lot of success in my days as a golfer----and just because someone cannot hook an iron does not mean they cannot play.

I have to agree with this post.

Your iron shots are more than likely going too high and short because you play a fade. Fix your swing first... if the ball is still going to high... change your shafts.

since no one has suggested it, i would definitely go see a club fitter and demo as much as possible, i did and went with some mx-25's with rifle shafts.

Well, getting irons with higher offset will help you turn the ball over more, but your distances show that you seem to hit the ball really well, and you're just frustrated that you can't draw the ball more. And your perception of lower distances could be from the fade/high shot you usually play. Fades subtract yards. Draws add them. So...

Here's an idea. I try to control trajectory to control shot shape. I know this isn't a fix all (or even a fix any, depending on your swing) but it's worth a try. If you want to draw the ball more, concentrate on hitting a lower trajectory shot. I try to picture a hula hoop 15-20 yards past the set up location. Hit to the hula hoop. Put the hula hoop high in the air if you want a fade. Put it lower to the ground if you want a draw. This image seems to put my shoulders in the right place to execute the shot.

Trajectory does relate to shot shape. Think about it. When's the last time you saw a nasty duck hook with a high launch? When's the last time you saw a low fade shot (not a block or punch)?

I know it may sound confusing. It may sound like it won't work. But it's what I picture. It's worth a try.
