Hello all,

I'm going to spend an a week with the family pretty soon here. They recently moved about 2 hours south of me to Mission Viejo. They did of course move into one of those "planned" gated communities with a country club, but it is minus a golf course. So I'm looking for any courses in the general area (Mission Viejo, Lake Forrest, Dana Point, Newport, Laguna, Irvine, Huntington Beach) that allow the general public to play. Thanks in advance.

Hello all,

Rancho San Joaquin, near the UC Irvine campus. Decent track, not worth what they charge on weekends.

Shorecliffs. I've heard that Pres. Nixon used to play there. Also that the LPGA once played there. I like the course. Get a tee time at click4teetimes if you're playing on a weekday. I played 18 holes, with cart, there a few weeks ago for $12.50. A bit more expensive on weekends. Not a bad track. Hole 16 was the first time I was on the green in 2 on a par-5, but it is now a par-4. Talega . Want to spend some money? Great course! Bit pricier. Arroyo Trabuco. Great course too. Not as pricey as Talega. Your first beer costs cents equal to your score after the round (21 and over). I've once gotten them to give me an iced tea at the score rate, but not every time I'm there. Looking for executive courses?? Newport Beach course, near John Wayne. If you ignore that you're hitting off mats, it's nice. Lake Forest G&PC; is a 9-hole executive course, not worth even the weekday rate. Two par-4s, one of which isn't really a par-4 (it's barely 200 yards). Looking for a driving range? Go to Saddleback Community College. Grass and mats. Balls in good shape. Grass in good shape (especially the north end, which is closed to the public during the week). Mats in generally good shape. Beautiful range. Two ends, well over 400 yards apart. Right near a Roger Dunn too.

We had an executive course in KC that made you hit off mats. We would literally putt off the mats then fluff our lies for our "second" shots. They tried to tell us we couldn't do that, but nothing ever happened because of us doing that. Of course you only had to do it on a few of the holes, once you got out of sight of the clubhouse you just teed up off of the tee boxes.

My Equipment:

Goldwin AVDP Irons (5-10 plus PW);
U.S. Golf 60 degree wedge;

Thanks Shindig, I have been to that Roger Dunn near Saddleback though never the range, will have to check that out for sure, it's only about 5-10 minutes from their home.

I live in Ladera Ranch, immediately next to Mission Viejo. It's pretty pricey in OC versus near Simi Valley, CA where I moved from. Here's a breakdown on price and you can check out greenskeeper.org under Southern California > Orange County for course conditions. Mostly all courses just aerated. Top stand out is: Strawberry Farms

UPPER END (Around $100+)
Straberry Farms GC***(Irvine)
The Crossings (In Carlsbad - 40 min south of Mission Viejo)
Monarch Beach (where AIG just played @ the St. Regis Dana Point)

MIDDLE (Around $75)
Arroyo Trabuco (Misison Viejo)
Tijeras Creek (Rancho Santa Margarita)
Tustin Ranch (Tustin)

LOWER (Around $50)
Rancho San Joaquin (Irvine)
San Juan Hills (San Juan Capistrano)

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions. If you can't check them on Greenskeeper (which will tell you which ones were just aerated), just do a Google Search.

Best Bang For the Buck: Strawberry (high-end); Arroyo & Tijeras (mid); San Juan Hills (low)

If you have $250 to spare, I would take a drive down to Carlsbad to play Aviara or La Costa. Then again, 20 more minutes down you can play Torrey Pines in San Diego...

Oak Creek is a decent track as well and is in Irvine, a little on the pricey side. I've played Strawberry Farms as well but I think you can find better courses for what you pay here.

But there's a lot of courses in Southern Cal doing maintenance so check beforehand

That's right about Oak Creek. It's a sister course of Pelican Hill. I found Oak Creek just ok because the layout wasn't impressive or anything for the money. I've been dreaming of playing at Pelican one day.

But can't go wrong with Arroyo & Tijeras as both are on the hill edges, so the views are beautiful and the layouts are not too easy/not too tough...

San Clemente Muni is a fun course for around $40.

Mile Square in Fountain Valley has 2 18-hole courses that are pretty good for $40-$50.

Coyote Hills in Fullerton offers some dramatic elevation changes and nice views for around $90. Their greens are in great condition right now, I played there yesterday.

    • If you own a Stack radar (for now, it's limited to Stack radar only), and want to work on your wedge game… it turns out that wedge distances are 99% correlated to ball speed. So, with a small radar, you can practice your wedge game easily in a gamified way.
    • Day 11: 2/16/2025 Rince and Repeat: Just like yesterday I spent several 5-10 minute sessions working on what I learned on Friday.
    • Quick update. So, I got the PXG Secret Weapon and I have to say I like it... mostly. (see below) I spent some time with it on the range and I even gathered some data in doors. I'm not going to post data yet, as my swing is still a bit of a work in progress and I'd like to gather some more data after I settle down a little bit more. But here's my review.  First as a driver replacement. ... IMO it is not a replacement, it's clearly more of a supplement... for me anyway. Not long enough to really replace the driver. For me it's about 20 yards short of my driver. It is longer than my 30-wood off the tee. (15 yards-ish) I will say it is easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. I get some of my best shots teeing it low, but I also get some of my worst. If I tee it about a full inch off the ground I get very consistent shots. Super repeatable. Amazingly repeatable even with my messy swing. Off the tee, I find it draw biased just a bit. You can tinker with the set up if that isn't your personal cup of tea.  As a 3-wood replacement. For me it's about perfect. It's longer than my 3-wood off the deck (my data showed 10 yards longer) and it has a gentle fade to it, which I love. You do need a clean lie, but I never hit my 3-wood off anything but a clean lie anyway. I found it interesting that I hit a gentle fade off the deck and a slight draw off a tee. I'm sure that's not uncommon. Again, you can tinker with the set up to optimize that if you wanted to... I don't want to.  It's clearly a lot longer than my 3-wood off the tee. Easier to hit off the tee than my 3 wood, and off the deck it's also longer. So, it's a no-brainer 3-wood replacement for me. I will say that over the years I've learned to use my 3-wood for this low-flying-100-yard-punch-out-from-under-a-tree shot.  I'll have to see if the Secret Weapon can handle that duty. But it's going in the bag to replace the 3-wood.  I also turned my 5-wood down from 19 degrees to 17 degrees. ... Incidentally my 3-wood had been 16 degrees. I used to always hit my 5 wood and my hybrid about the same distance. This adjustment helps my gapping a bit at the top of the bag. I can clearly hit my 5-wood farther than my hybrid now.  Overall on the PXG Secret Weapon. The good: It's clearly longer and easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. It's a bit longer off the deck than my 3-wood.  It's super forgiving... surprisingly so.  It's uber adjustable. ... Although I do suggest getting fit for it. That will save you having to (or wanting to) buy a weight kit just to try out the infinite number of set ups. The headcover is super cool.  The maybe not so good: Shots out of the middle sound great. Shots off the heal sound great. Shots off the toe sound ... what's the work... clangy? It's very forgiving off the toe and the heal. The flight and the distance are incredibly consistent. But the sound off the toe isn't great.  For me I tend to draw it off the tee and fade it off the deck. You can set it up to be biased either way, but in my hands I think if I set up a draw off the deck, that might induce a duck hook off the tee. ... In fairness that could also be where my swing is at right now.  It's pretty spendy. ... If I really stop and think about it, I paid $450 for a new 3-wood. Granted it's a better performing 3-wood. But for me it's really a 3-wood replacement.
