I am fairly long (265 yds avg.), amd reliably straight off the tee. Approaches with my irons are the big weakness in my game, I just can't get them close and I usually have a 7 iron or less to the green. I'm a strong chipper and pitcher and I rarely make a mistake from a greenside bunker. However,I do miss a fair amount of those short putts for an up and down that I leave myself, although I only three-putt about once or twice a round. As far as course management goes, I sometimes lose my concentration and do something silly, but I do know what shot is called for in most situations.

I know some will look at my handicap and then look at these numbers and say, "huh?". Especially course management. Fact is I know how to manage the course, I just don't always strike the ball where I want it to go!

My driving is pretty good, but I still have a hook that lingers around, chipping and pitching are my bread and butter. I put a lot of practice in that field. My putting is pretty good I usually linger around 27-30 putts. My only problem about course management is I don't really think about my tee shots enough. I just usually hit my driver when I should hit a higher lofted club get in the fairway, and find an exact distance for my second shot. My sand game is above average. Then the approach is really hurting me. I sweep the ball too much, so I have some control issues.

Im an aggressive player and struggle when it comes to playing conservatively. I take the Phil Mickelson approach, and thats why I love golf.

Short off the tee (ave 220 yds) but hit 65% of fairways.
Approach shots w/ irons/hybrids are my strength but I'm going to have to put in a lot of work on my short game to get to single digits.
Putting is improving but I'm always good for one or two 3putts per round.

I'm very consistent off the tee, but I have been disappointed with my ability to get the ball close on approach shots. I am typically a sweeper, so I rarely put spin on the ball. That attributes to me being on the green but 20 feet away quite often, as opposed to getting it 12 ft or closer, where I have a legitimate chance of making birdie. Short game is getting better, making more up and downs, but still needs work.

Last 2 seasons have been spent taking stock of my game and making improvements where I can. To date, here's how I'd rate my game based on your breakdown:

Driving - 7 - Getting off the tee in play no longer a serious problem
Approach - 3.0 - this part of the game is killing me!
Short Game - 8
Putting - 7.5
Sand - 7
Course Management - 8.5 - I see the mistakes and take precaution to avoid

The ultimate "old man" setup:

Ping G30 driver
Ping G Fairway woods - 5 and 7 woods
Callaway X-Hot #5 hybrid; Old school secret weapon
Ping G #6-9 irons; W and U wedges

I know that my weakest area is approach shots into greens (I think I am only hitting about 25% GIR), and if it wasn't for my pretty strong short game I would be scoring MUCH worse.

Off the tee I am decent (250 - 260 average) and usually straight (or right ... ).

I bought a new putter this season, hated it and went back to my old putter, started putting well again (the new putter had a plastic insert on the face of the blade - bought it before I knew any better).

With my course management I tend to get comfortable with areas of my courses and tend to aim for those areas ... I don't try new things, think new ways ("from there I always make par - I will aim there" instead of "Well, I made Par from there before, where can I make bird from this time?")

These are all things to reflect on now ... it's getting cold, and grey here in New England ... I just know "Old Man Winter" is on his way ...

When I'm on fire

Driving - 9 (i'll put it in the short stuff 70% of the time & where I want & distance is usually 260 - 285 & depending on conditions a 300 here or there)
Approach - 7 (i'll get within 15' for a shot at eagle or birdie) (5' for par)
Recovery - 8 (i'll recover from basically anything except ob)
Short Game - 7 (i'll be within 10' feet for a par putt)
Putting - 6 (no 3 putts, lots of 2 putts and a few 1 putts)
Sand - 7 (i'll get out of sand for a manageable putt)
Course Management - 7 (it'll always be a 7 right now b/c i still try stupid sh** like jacking a 3 wood 250 over water even though 250's the most I'll take a 3 wood controlled)

when I'm TERRIBLE

Driving - 4 (230 straight with a 60 yard hook or slice)
Approach - 5 (not comfortable from 165 - 220..i just want a 7 & under in my hand & I still mess those shots up)
Recover - 5 (b/c i have too many shots from trees, rough, terrible lies since my tee shot was terrible)
Short Game - 5 (i can still play
Putting - 3 (2 & 3 putt central)
Sand - 7 (i'll still get out)
Course Management - 6 (same as mentioned above b/c i'm trying to make up strokes...i'll go for stuff i shouldn't)

    • Day 49. Played 9 from tees a bit beyond my comfort zone and was humbled. Hit a couple good shots so will take that at least.
    • +12 47, and never lost a ball or had a penalty. Got the snap hooks off the tee for the first 3 holes. So, playing the punch out game. Probably had like 20 putts. Bad short game day. The greens were weirdly firm but slow. I just don’t get spin out of the rough. I had a SW, with good height hit middle half of the green and end up almost off the back of the green. I know what I was doing with the full swing. Bad habits creeping in.
    • 9 years and counting. Lil chipped paint here and there but still going strong. Also have an 18 deg driving iron that I got a couple of years ago which is doing well too. @iacastried it and I think he liked it.
    • For PING to assemble and ship it? It's a 3H. Yea, the new club has more loft. How do you like that, 2H?
    • Then go on gitchu a brand spanking new 2H son.. what are you waiting for?
