I have just bought a new 3 wood (haven't got on with them in the past but thought i'd give one a try again). My question is which club should I drop to accommodate it as I already have 14 (driver, 16 & 19* hybrid, 4-pw, 50, 54 & 60* wedge and putter). I have a distance gap of 10-15yds between my hybrids and 10-15yds between my 19* hybrid and 4 iron.

drop the 16* hybrid. the 3wood will replace that. dont drop a wedge, short game is the most vital part of anyone's game.

Assuming that your 3-wood is 15* I would drop the 16*hybrid, since one degree should not make a difference,(although with the difference between a hybrid and fairwaywood you really can't tell until you get out on the course oron a launch monitor) thats what I would do anyway.

Yes it is a 15* 3 wood. I was thinking maybe dropping the 2h and choking down the 1h to fill that gap but the 2h is much easier to hit out of the rough. Decisions decisions.

drop the 16 hybrid and learn to choke up on the 3 wood to take distance off the club.

I think the best thing to do is just play 2 or 3 practice rounds with all 15 clubs and see which club you use the least. I would think the dropping the 16* would make the most sense, but you'll know better after playing. If the course isn't crowded just hit a couple shots from some situations with different clubs to see if 'choking' up can replace you 2H or whatever scenario you are considering.

I would drop the 16 hybrid. Personally i would also bend the 54 wedge to a 55. I would do this to make equal distances. Just my prefrence.

This is good advice, take everyclub you have ever thought about putting in your bag and try it. You will be surprised what clubs you hit alot more than others. Personally i was amazed how often i hit 3 irons, compared to how seldom i hit a 50 degree. or how much more often i hit two iron rather than 2 hybrid.

Its crazy, just keep track of it all, and it will become pretty apparent.

It's unanomous, although I might not have spelled that correctly....drop the 16* hybrid.

Are you really? I thought you'd be impressed.

Haha. For real, I decided there is some merit to the idea of using more players clubs if you wanna be a player. Really I haven't gamed this setup yet, and if I had a challenging tee time tomorrow, I might sneak the hybrids and wedges back in. But I still have the 64* so that makes me a hack I suppose. And per your advice earlier, I really don't hit my 50* much either. I'm thinking about bending the wedge to 48* and go 48*, 56*, 64*. I'm retooling my entire game - grip, posture, everything. First trip to the range I painted the center of my irons. We'll see how that lasts.

I'll take the advice given and drop the 16* hybrid. My only concern is a 230yd par 3 at my home course. Not sure I can make it with the 19* but will overshoot with the 3 wood. I'll just have to be a little creative I suppose. Thanks for all advice given

ya drop the 16*. most 3 woods are 15* you only lose 1* of loft. i also have a driver, 15* 3 wood and a 19* hybrid and it works just fine.

    • I'll say again… you have a different definition of "temporary" and "speed" than I do. For your handicap to go up FOUR shots means you were through the soft cap and approaching the hard cap. If you did it over 15 rounds (leaving five potentially lower scores), then you played REALLY bad golf over that stretch because it's likely that only three or four of the best of those 15 rounds were actually counted, so if the three or four best scores RAISED your handicap five shots (three at 100%, 2 at 50% once you hit the soft cap), then that's some BAD golf over an extended (not temporary) period of time. And here's the thing… play 15 good rounds, or even just EIGHT, and it'll DROP again, even faster. Handicaps still drop faster than they rise, not only because of the way we calculate it (best 😎 but because of the caps. Right… it's not like you're not needing the shots. You're playing really badly, and your handicap is still lagging behind your play.
