nothing real suprising... but an interesting little article

the anthem thing is kind of funny, and in most professional sports the visiting team has lesser locker rooms... it's really no excuse (and I'm not sure Garcia thinks it is either)...

"The locker-room we had was really, really small and uncomfortable. I wish it had been even half the size of theirs (The USA's).

It's called home-field advantage Sergio, that's what happens when you play a team sport. Get over it, you have your shot in two years. This is why other athletes have issue with considering golf a sport, this kind of snobbery hurts the game. Sergio is by far the most ungrateful looser on tour, though Woody gives him a close run now and then.

Thanks for the article....

So far I liked Sergio, but these remarks will let him drop quite a bit in my ranking.

I mean, come on: shower, locker room, anthem.... ridiculous.

The reason for the defeat was, that Garcia, Harrington et al. just did their jobs, while the US team was enthusiastic and really wanted to win.
Plain and simple.

As a European, I don't like to hear such whinging from one of our top players. The US team played tremendous golf that week and thoroughly deserved to win. Most of the Europeans didn't produce the goods and got beaten - end of story.

As someone said, the home team always has an advantage. I'm sure Seve played worst 'tricks' on the visiting US team in Valderrama!

I'm sure, as is the case with a lot of interviews, some of that was taken out of context and/or the quotes are incomplete.

I saw it yesterday on Golf Central. I really think it's a shame that a great palyer like him, make news of what he talks than the way he plays. Also I think it's a shame how the rivarly between Sergio and Padraig has became worst. I hope that in the 09 season they don't play together in the same group because it will not be comfotable even to watch. LOL.

What does he mean "they knew where the pins and tees were going to be and we didn't"?

Didn't they and their caddies get to walk and play the same course as the USA? Or did I miss something.

Thanks for the article....

Come on, don't be silly... Every time an European missed a green or a putt, you guy's (you, has in american) would go histerical. Is that home field advantage too? The answer is yes... if the sport is football, soccer, basketball... Golf is a game of gentleman, and I just think that Garcia has every right to be upset by that. Specially by the anthem part. That is shamefull. You don't have to know the other country's anthem, but you sure have to respect them. I bet that you'd not like if the ryder cup was played in europe and your anthem was not played.

Has I said above, unless you are affiliated to one golf club, you do not have the home turf advantage, even if you are playing agaist foreigners in a great match like the Ryder Cup. That was not the spirit the Ryder Cup was meant to be played in, just like what happened during the 1999 match. It is disrespectfull and shamefull for the U.S. side and for every american who participated and did what I described above. Plus everyone hates Sergio because he has been destroying the US side in past maches.

I forgot... the crowds behave perfectly in Europe? 08' was nothing like Brookline... at Brookline the US team used poor judgement, at the 08' cup it was a few bad apple fans. Not at all the same. There should be an advantage for the home team even in golf... the locker rooms and such frivilous crap is really a non-issue and Sergio (whom I like, not sure why, but I do) was being a little bitch by complaining (unless comments were totally out of context). and actually they played his anthem twice... it was the Sweedes who got left out.... and that was certainly most likely an error by some guy working the sound board, not some conspiracy to shame or deflate the euros. Seriously... this is petty shit and Sergio is whinning... just like the "waiting to hit my shot while bunker is raked"... "playing against more than the field", etc. comments.

That is all true, but he was not complaining about unfair cheering. I would have understood that.

He is complaining about the size of the locker room. Messing up the anthem is definitely stupid (by the organizers), but if that has bugged him so bad that he could not play, he should work with a mental coach. The only guys who could have really been upset where the swedish, but if I remember correctly they did a really good job. Sergio should stop whining about showers and toilets, and keep kicking Anthony Kims and the others backsides on the golfcourse.

Sergio should be shaved, sterilized, and destroyed.

12 monkeys reference?

also, i agree with the folks who say sergio just needs to can it. play your game and quit your whining. i mean come on. the locker room only had two showers? what difference does THAT make? doesn't your hotel room have a shower?

I would be complaining quite a bit too if Anthony Kim came out and whooped my ass like he did Sergio's. Apparently he's yet to come to the conclusion that there is no excuse for cracking under pressure, and that's what he does best.

    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
    • Day 552, May 7, 2024 Played nine holes with @NatalieB with irons only from her tees. Didn't really finish out any holes, just hit the irons and approaches and some chips.
    • What has gone downhill? Have you been practicing properly, filming your swing, working on exactly what he suggested without straying? My thoughts are that your results/outcomes from a lesson a year ago probably aren't all that relevant anymore.  And carry distance is far more important than total distance. Total distance is going to vary significantly based on course conditions.
    • One thing that has helped me tremendously is to spray the club face with foot powder when I am on the range. Seeing ball impact can be quite helpful if you are hitting shots all over the place. It's not the cure all, but a good little thing to do on the range. The other thing, and I will forget to do it, is the pre-shot routine. Find me a spot a foot or so from the ball in-line with my target, take my stance, take the swing.  Sometimes you take a BS practice swing with no thought. Make it deliberate.  As far as swing thoughts. I have 3 check-points. First is set-up, Second is my take away, Third is my downswing. I cant explain what I think I just know in my mind. Its a feeling that I have that feels right and experience has shown that if I follow those 3 thoughts more than likely the outcome will be what I was looking for. Now, thinking about the feeling and executing it properly is a whole different thing, that;s why I practice, I used to be over a 20 handicap, I am down to a 15.1 in about a year.  I feel like its good progress. the goal is a 10 by the end of the year. If I make it great, if not, hey at least Im not in Gaza. LOL
    • I usually shy away from giving advice on a golf swing since so many here are more qualified than I am.  You might try the following:  Create a "MySwing" page on this  site and you will get a lot of good advice Filter all of the advice and try to only focus on one or two things at a time.  Unfortunately it is very hard, if not impossible, to constantly change different things at the same time.  Figure out what is the most important thing to work on at this moment in your golf swing and focus on that until you have it engrained, then move on the the next change. Remember, we all have both good & bad shots.  The difference between the pros and us hackers is the ratio of good to bad shots. Understand that a bad swing can occasionally look like a great result and a good swing can occasionally have a bad result.  The key is to focus on one thing and work to get that as consistent as possible.  Ideally that will gradually increase the number of good shots vs bad shots.    Do not forget to have fun.
