In December, Jack Nicklaus shot a 6 under par 66 at The Bear's Club in Jupiter, Fl. This is the first time that he has bettered his age (he is 68 years old now). How appropriate--he beat his age by two shots, and not one, and he had one bogey (and 7 birdies)! Congratulations to him! It is also appropriate that he did on one of his courses.

I am 60, and will be 61 in July. My lowest competitive score is a 5 under 65 in a qualifying round for the Men's Club Championship. It will be at least 3 years before I can realistically expect to better my age. In last Saturday's "Wall Street Journal", John Paul Newport had a great article about players bettering their age, and some of the men and women are simply amazing. Apparently, if you are a single digit handicapper, keep your self in shape, and are healthy, you will join this club and better your age many times.

I shot my age (36) on nine this year. That's a first for me. It was on a par 35.

A golf records site has this amazing record. The odds of any of us beating these numbers seems infinitely remote. I wonder how old Mr. Smith is now?

The Record:

"The record for most times shooting your age belongs to T. Edison Smith of Moorhead, Minn. Frank Bailey of Abilene, Texas, had long held this record, matching or beating his age 2,623 times, from age 71 until age 98. But in 2006, Smith passed Bailey and continues on with the record."

N.B: to be recognized the tees played must be over 6,000 yards.

You are right. And it goes to show that for some people at least, golf is the game for a lifetime. In most sports, players have to "hang it up" by the age of 40 or 50, but some golfers are like the Energizer Bunny---they just go on and on. Jack, Arnie, and Gary are like that. God bless them.

I finally found a write up about T.E. Smith. He was 92 at the time of the article (September, 2008) and had just shot his age or better for the 2900th time. He carries a 16 handicap. Apparently he has a shoulder problem and is slowing down. I hope to heck I can play the 4 or 5 times a week he is reported to play when I am 92.

The previous record holder, Frank Bailey played cross-handed, which gave his swing a little zip for a long, long time.
