Everyone says hybrids are easier to hit, but my friend got one and neither of us can hit it very well at all. I've heard you are supposed to swing down on it like an iron, but I just can't seem to do it...It looks like a wood so I tend to sweep. I can't remember the loft on it, but I'm thinking it is 19*. Any tips?

You just have to get over the head shape in time. The hybrid likes a nice soft full swing, You are supposed to hit it with 7 iron tempo . And hit down on it just like an iron. You want to crush it cause it looks like a wood but once someone told me the 7iron trick it really changed the way I hit hybrids. You are probably just sweeping the ball cause your not used to it, takes awhile just like anything

I usually just sweep the clubhead across it. If you're hitting down on it, that's probably why it's not working out. Atleast in my experience with a 3 hybrid, the club tends to do all the hard work for me.

Hit it like an iron, not like a fairway wood.

If you try to sweep it like a 3 wood you'll likely thin it. Hit it just like an iron.

You should still hit down with a hybrid, just like an iron.

This issue came up in a golf magazine not long ago, IIRC. The question was deciding between fairway woods like 7W and 9W or hybrids in the same lofts. The factor was your swing. If you have more of a sweeping swing, get fairway woods. If you tend to have a better time hitting down, get hybrids. I think Golf Magazine had an issue where Padraig covered in depth how to hit hybrids. It was within the last 4 months I think. You should look that issue up.

I hit my irons better than my woods because I hit down better than I can execute a sweeping swing. I opted to get hybrids and it works for me.

Edit: Look here and notice how he's taking quite a bit of grass with his shot. He even says play them like irons (hence hit down): http://www.golf.com/golf/gallery/art...845436,00.html

Happened to me. I was desperate. Everybody and his brother was telling how easy it is to hit a hybrid. So i got one, but could never hit it flush.

I always topped it and drove the ball into the ground. I did not hit the hybrid for a while, and worked on my iron swing. When had my iron swing stabilized, I tried the hybrid again, and from that point it is working great for me. So the way to your hybrid is via your irons. Start with the easy, short irons and go backward. Then just grab the hybrid and be happy.

I have been told to hit it like an iron but in all honesty... my hybrid is 18* so hitting it like a fairway wood makes more sense to me. Plus, I get better results with a sweeping motion. I do however take a very small divot when I pure it.

If you are taking a divot, you are hitting down like an iron.

I have a mate who does'nt play hybrids,he often trys to hit mine but can't,reason being he always feels like he has to swing out of his shoes to hit it and plus he plays it to far foward in his stance.

I have a less-steep takeaway with a 19* hybrid. I would do the same with a 4-Iron.

the key to a hybrid is an easy swing. the club will do all the distance work, u just need to relax, take an easy swing. if u try to get to quick and power it, it will end up with a hook.

    • That's part of why faster greens reward better putters. Given time to acclimate, golfers of any level (not talking about utter beginners or people who can't break 100 often) putt better on faster greens.
    • Smoother greens rewards better putters. The faster the green, the bigger the error in distance control. But, if you make the greens too slow good players are not used to hit the ball that hard so it can make them struggle a bit.
    • Day 11 (August 21).  Practice session this morning;  chipping for a while (focusing chips that aren't "on the number" for me --- I'm very comfortable with 20 and 25 yard chips, less so with 15 and 10).  Then full swing work, shared a small bucket.  For my share, I was focusing on setup and where I'm aiming.  It dawned on me that I've been hitting some really nice drivers and woods lately, as far as contact, flight, and distance, but not getting them where I want them to go, and the conversation from yesterday's Spin Axis podcast (nice to finally be caught up!) made me realize I wonder if I'm adjusting my aim for the difference in swing path.  I definitely put my woods closer to my intended target line today;  not sure if that means I'm adjusting for a pull or aiming correctly though. 😕
    • Tied my season low with a 79 at an away course.  Nothing spectacular on the front (3 pars, 6 bogeys), but on the back I had 3 birdies (should have been 4 as I missed a putt from 5').   This round almost dropped one full shot from my index....from a 13.4 to a 12.6   Also....just a on side note, I have a consecutive 72 hole streak currently on playing the same ball.
