ap1 vs ap2

Just looking for some opinions. I'm a 15 handy and looking for some new irons. I have a wore out pair of Nicklaus. Haven't yet hit either of these and wanted some feedback before I do. I am finally getting to play more(couple 1-2 times a week) so I am looking to improve my game. Thanks

I've only had my AP2's for a day, and haven't been able to play yet (snow

). I did hit a few balls from my back yard into the field behind the house and those shots felt incredible. I think I'm going to like them, but I just haven't used them enough to get a good feel yet. When I was trying them at Golfsmith, I didn't even try out the AP1, so I can't give you a comparison. Just that I'm switching to the AP2 from my King Cobra's... and that's a huge difference.

If these are the only 2 sets that you will be trying, I think that is a bad idea. The AP1s were a bit too chunky for my taste. They were not exactly shovels, but I did not like the look. Consequently, I didn't spend much time hitting them. The AP2s were much nicer. They were cleaner (less offset, thinner topline, etc.) The shafts were also pretty nice (Project X or DGS300...idk). I would think that at a 15, you could play the AP2s. If you cannot hit them well right now, you'd grow into them. Players on tour use them as well, so they are really solid clubs.

I too must say that if you're only considering the AP line it seems less benneficial. After recently switching to old Mizuno Irons with good shafts I realised what a difference the shaft makes. If you're hitting decent iron shots already and are keen to improve I personally would suggest the AP2's with the better shaft or another good forged iron with decent shaft's, especially Mizuno's

When I buy my AP2's I didn't try the AP1's, but the fitter told me: "If you are looking to become a better player I think you should go with some Forged clubs." Give a try also to the MP-57's they are great too.

definitley try the mizuno mp line as well as the ap2's if you are looking to "grow into" a set of "better player" irons.

Tried both as well as the Mizuno MP-57's, Cleveland Reds, Callaway X20 tours and a few others. I was a Mizuno T-Zoid Pro user for many years and had my heart set on another set of Miz's. Unfortunately as my game has changed I needed something a little more forgiving but didn't want full game improvement irons. The AP2s were the best balance of feel and forgiveness of all the players irons I tried. My best suggestion is to try several brands and find what works for you. However, given you're a 15- if you have trouble making consistens sweet spot contact, and I mean true sweet spot, you may want to go with something with even more forgiveness than the AP2s (X20 tours?). If you really plan to work on your game I'd recommend forged irons though (X20's are not forged).

I wouldn't be afraid of the AP2s. I have a blended set, 4,5 in AP1 and 6,7,8,9 and P in AP2. I did end up changing shafts from the Rifle Flighted to Nippons and recommend you get some good advice and try out different shafts if you can. I'm no fantastic ball striker, but the AP2s are not hard to hit at all, and more enjoyable to play than the PING I3+ "blades" I was playing before. I really did like the difference in the shorter irons in feel and play with the
AP2s vs. the AP1s.

Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback. I will hit various clubs, but wanted to keep the thread somewhat narrow for discussion on these in particular. There seems to be a lot of love for the ap2's.

I also narrowed it down to ap2/1 after testing everything on the market. Note that I actually did NOT & DO NOT want to play titileist, for some reason I just don't like the brand. Yet I play with ProV1's, vokeys & Ap2's...

Looking at my hcp & what I was looking for in my irons Ap1 should have been the logical choice at the time. But it was a no brainer, the ap2 just felt soooo good. I have not regretted going with them even once.

I plan to improve my game big time over the next 12 months or so, but since I have only played a few times, I went with the AP1s and have no regrets so far! I hit about 6 different sets before selecting them. I do believe that they will last me several years, and they are somewhat workable from what I can tell. I can hit a fade on purpose. A draw...no- but that's likely where I run out of talent. I can also control trajectory fairly well. Hope this bit of information helps.

Ultimately, I believe that you can't go wrong with either one, but get fitted! I ended up needing 4 degrees up with 1" longer due to my size and hand to floor height. I also went with ProjectX 6.0 shafts and Jumbo grips because of my swing speed.

Zach Johnson switched to the AP2's. I saw him at the Shriner's Open in Las Vegas and it looked like he was playing with 735cm's and 695cb's. The next evolution in clubs I assume.

I bought AP2's back in september.

I tried the current range, mp, taylor made and i really loved the titliest.

i tried both the Ap1 ands Ap2. went the AP2 because the forged head felt solid and i much prefered the thinner top egde.

i got fitted with +2degree lie and +3/4".

suggest you look at getting shaft fitted as well. got project x 6.0 make a big difference and feel at impact.

I agree with the previous post, I have a blended set, 5-PW in AP2's and then a 18 and 24 909H hybrids. The AP2's are my first forged set and they're a blast to hit. I hit them well and they still give me enough forgiveness.

I originally had planned to go with the AP1 because I thought I needed the forgiveness but my fitter saw my performance on the AP1 and had me try the AP2 and said I was "good enough" to play AP2. Since then, I've been hitting them well, still trying to get used to them but I am hitting the ball better. The 2 degrees upright helps a ton too!
