Well, I just turned in my application for the U.S. Open's rounds of qualifying. This will be my first time trying, and I don't have all too much competition golf under my belt since my days in high school. However, my game is pretty much where it needs to be. And being a guy that makes tons of pars and the U.S. Open not being a go-low type tournament, I might just do alright if I can get in the field. Far fetched, maybe, but for $150, why the hell not give it a go?

Good luck, bud. Someday, someway, I hope to get good enough to give it a shot. A playing partner of my dad's got in in 2000 at Pebble, so it's definitely a tangible, realistic goal...

Good luck Ben. I've done the US Amateur qualifier the last couple years with no success but had a blast. It's worth the experience. Let us know how it goes...

Good luck, Ben!

I've tried the Public Links qualifiers in the past. Made the cut for the second rounds but that was about it. Had lots of fun and it felt like "real" golf.

Enjoy!

Good luck Ben... I'm sure you'll have fun in the process and who knows how far you'll make it. It'd be fun to feature you in a Sand Trap article in the future. No pressure!

Good luck, Ben! That's one of my dreams, to get good enough to at least enter the qualifying someday.

Thanks for all the encouragement! It'll be an experience, that's for sure. My first round of qualifying is May 16th.

...and putt like a mad man.

Yeap, that's what's going to make me or break me. I've gotta putt like I've never putted before I think.

Good luck to you Ben and neudi. To be solid enough to even try to qualify is worth mentioning, and it would be awesome if both of you qualified. I would be bragging to everyone I know.

Good luck and just remember fairways and greens....and putting.

Dave, why aren't you trying to qualify?

Dave, why aren't you trying to qualify?

Three reasons.

  1. I can't even qualify for the US Amateur.
  2. I'm just not ready for that yet because...
  3. The gap between myself and the guys that qualify is much, much bigger than you think.
Other than that, yeah, I should try and qualify.

Fairways and Greens.

I dunno, NC...

Sounds to me like you just talked yourself out of it.

All I know is that if I had a plus handicap and the time to do it, I'd be there with bells on. Yeah, there's guys there that are probably better, but they feel pressure just like everyone else does. All I know is that somewhere down the road I'd be kicking myself for not giving it a shot when I had the chance.

What's the worst that could happen? At the very least, you'll have a few war stories to tell your grandkids. Or, you might even catch fire and end up as deep as the finals or even the Open itself. But I know one thing that's an absolute certainty:

You'll never know unless you try.

Nah. I've tried the US Amateur the last couple years and will do it again. I really enjoy the competition, but there is a definite line between good and great...and it is mostly in the short game.

All I know is that if I had a plus handicap and the time to do it, I'd be there with bells on. Yeah, there's guys there that are probably better, but they feel pressure just like everyone else does. All I know is that somewhere down the road I'd be kicking myself for not giving it a shot when I had the chance.

I'm not saying I won't ever give it a shot, but I'm a realist when it comes to my game. I have big dreams, as our friend Bob Rotella loves, but they have to be attainable. My dream right now is to simply qualify for the US Amateur...that's all. Everything else would be gravy. If that happens, then I'll go for the US Open qualifier.

What's the worst that could happen? At the very least, you'll have a few war stories to tell your grandkids. Or, you might even catch fire and end up as deep as the finals or even the Open itself. But I know one thing that's an absolute certainty:

Again, I have tried and I do have war stories...how about holing out for eagle and then two holes later making a triple? Bet the kids will love that nightmare.

Fairways and Greens.
